Apprehension gnawed at my soul. Brendan had urged me to his house after the Covert-Jensen article hit the Web and we were now seated in his dining room. I tugged at my fingernails with my teeth, waiting for Brendan to cut through the silence.

"Want me to be honest?" he asked as he gazed at me.

I looked like a mess. I sat cross-legged on his sofa, moving my toes as if I had a slight tick, my lips chapped and my hair unkept. I nodded his way. Honesty wasn't the best policy, it was the only policy.

"I knew about Sam's little scandal," he admitted. "Not from the files though, she confessed it to me. She made me swear I wouldn't tell Chad, but what for? Now the whole world knows and it sucks."

"Why'd she tell you?" I asked. Sam and he didn't seem that close.

Brendan shrugged.

"We were both a little buzzed that night," he revealed. "I guess she felt bad after I told her about my unrequited feelings for some girl."

Some girl? Was he talking about—

"She told me she had been the one leading the man on, but never meant for things to escalate to court. She had to pretend he had been coming onto her so her parents wouldn't disown her or something. Now, I don't know what's going to happen to her," Brendan pondered, his eyes wandering across the room.

I was wondering the same thing. Rob had ran away, would Sam do the same? Would she do something worse? We had to make sure she wouldn't do anything irreparable.

"We have to go check on her," I let out.

"I'd agree except that Chad texted me earlier, telling me that Samara hasn't even let him in today."

My heart leapt in my chest. Chad. I had forgotten that he was next on the list, after some guy named Antoine. Seeing as the updates on the website had gotten more frequent recently, I wouldn't be surprised if Sam's boyfriend got exposed by the end of the week.

"Maybe she's just too ashamed to face him," I muttered. "Maybe she'd prefer facing us."

"I don't think so," Brendan said.

"Please," I let out after blinking desperately his way. While silence grew between us, I couldn't help but notice how good he looked in the formal shirt he had slightly unbuttoned and the navy tie he had loosened around his neck. His blue eyes gauged mine for what felt like an eternity before he relaxed.

A smile cracked onto his solemn face as he sighed :

"That's unfair, you know I can't say no to you when you say please."

It was my turn to smile.

"Let's go then," I said with a grin.

The Jensens' dwelling I had visited just a day ago already looked desert. The windows were all sealed close, the curtains were drawn shut, and a few packages were abandoned by the front door. Did they really move out as quickly as they moved in? It couldn't be...
