It was finally summer. Finally no more school. No more dumbass teachers telling kids that their social life, sleep schedule, diet, and overall health doesn't matter. No more bullies. No more homophobic assholes thinking they're cool. Well, maybe a few more. No more assignments that take hours and hours on end. No more loneliness.
Never did one kid sit next to Taehyung that year. Never did they ask if "this seat is taken".
That's because everybody already knew. Nobody was going to sit next to the weird kid with a gay brother. Nobody was going to be friends with the boy who might've caught the "homo fever". Nobody was going to like Taehyung. Even if he was straight, curved, or a dot. Because he was really none of those things.
To them, he was nothing.
During the summer, there was no more loneliness. After that, only a few years of college and he would be free.
"Taehyung-ah! Food's ready!" Jin shouted from the kitchen, bowls of kimchi stew and white rice occupying his hands.
"I'll be down in a minute!" Tae yelled back. He was holed up in his room. Not texting anybody. No friends to text. No, instead, Taehyung was writing. Pen and paper.
The most lonely creature in the world
Written by Kim TaehyungThe one useful thing Tae learned from his years in high school was that, to write a successful piece of literature, you need to feel the topic of which you speak. You need to thoroughly understand it. Have a connection with it.
Over the years, the boy had become infatuated with whales. Well, not whales. That's much too broad. More like, just one whale. One whale with which he feels bonded to.
The 52 hertz whale- "an individual whale of unidentified species, which calls at the very unusual frequency of 52 Hz. This pitch is a much higher frequency than that of the other whale species with migration patterns most closely resembling this whale's – the blue whale (10–39 Hz) or fin whale (20 Hz). It has been detected regularly in many locations since the late 1980s and appears to be the only individual emitting a whale call at this frequency. It has been described as the 'world's loneliest whale'."
Taehyung himself felt like the loneliest living thing on the planet. Yet, there, consumed by all that darkness, swims a whale. A whale who can't communicate with other whales. A different frequency ruined that whale's life. It tries all it can to be heard, to be cared for, to be loved. But those cries fall on deaf ears.
Tae would like to say he was writing about this creature for colleges. To be seen as a potential student in the top universities. But all he really wants, is to make his thoughts known. This will be his last cry for help. As his one friend and companion, Tae hopes Jin does not have deaf ears.
He finished printing his name, slipped on a t-shirt and soft, cotton socks, quickly as to not anger his brother, and he ran down the stairs.
"Finally! Um, Tae, now that you've made me wait two whole minutes longer than I should've had to before being able to eat, I think it's only fair if I annoy you now with a conversation you didn't want to have earlier."
"And that would be...?"
"Well, I believe you've met Min Namjoon. Your hyung?"
"Yeah, I think I know him. He has a brother right?"
Jin nodded 'yes' with a hint of uncertainty for what his brother knew of the two boys.
"Right then. Yeah, him and his brother both used to attend my school. Yoongi, the other Min, he was pretty quiet and reserved. He didn't talk to anybody and I swear, he always had the same pissed off face. But, he didn't annoy me. I tolerated him." Maybe more than toleration. "But, I'm pretty sure that Namjoon was one of the more popular kids at school. The one with the sexy girlfriend, good grades, but he was still pretty nice."
Jin sighed in relief.
"I still never understood how they could share the same genes. Ha, Namjoon was a fucking maniac compared to Yoongi. The quiet kid and the loudest boy I have ever come in contact with."
"Well, actually, they don't," Jin began explaining.
"Don't what?"
"Share the same genes."
"What do you mean?"
"Um, you see, Namjoon is adopted. He-he's not blood related or anything to Yoongi," Jin said wearily.
"Oh, I guess that makes more sense. Wait, how do you know that? How do you know them?"
"Okay, Tae, you know I'm gay. You've been the perfect little brother about it. I love you for that. But I'm going to have to ask you to be kind and accepting of one more thing. I-I'm well, I'm sorta dating Min Namjoon." The older closed his eyes tightly in uncertainty of his brother's reaction.
"Oh shit, hyung was gay? Poor dude, he always had his insufferable cheerleader chick all over him. Damn. I never saw that coming."
Jin remained silent and shocked but his eyes shot open.
Taehyung, noticing this asked, "Wait, that was it? I mean, you gotta date somebody. Namjoon is good looking too. Go you."
"Wait, actually? You're not being sarcastic right now, are you?"
"No, dipshit. You're gay. You like guys. People date the people the like. You date guys. So, it makes perfect sense you would be dating another dude that's into dudes as well. In conclusion, you dating Namjoon is pretty great."
"Wow, well okay. Let's-um, let's eat. I'm starved."
"No doubt you are."
