Chapter 8- Some Memories Hurt
For the first time ever, Barbara felt at peace. It was as if God himself had grown tired of throwing curve balls at her. She could now wake up every morning, and feel the sun warming up her skin, bringing her back to life from the shadows that had brought her down for so long. Being in Kylee’s company had taught her to see past the obvious and expected. In her short eighteen years, she thought she had learned every possible move that society could make, yet in a movement quicker than the speed of light, life threw Kylee in her arms, and now Barbara had doubts and could only try to figure out if what she knew all this time was right and real, or if this was all but a joke or a dream.
They had been going out for 2 weeks now, and each day they were getting to know one another more and more. Barbara found it easy to smile around Kylee; it became a natural reaction when she was with her. Barbara adored everything about Kylee, and couldn’t find a single fault in her. For once, someone was perfect to Barbara.
They were at the park this warm afternoon, Barbara had her head on Kylee’s lap, and Kylee loved the closeness they shared. Their hands were intertwined and their eyes were locked with each other.
Barbara looked up at Kylee and smiled as she twirled a strand of her hair.
“Okay it’s your turn” Kylee said smiling at her “what’s your favorite hobby?” she asked
“Guitar, definitely” Barbara spoke
“You play guitar?!”
“And keyboard too” she smirked “But I like the sound of the guitar a lot more”
“And whys that?” Kylee asked. Barbara stood quiet for the longest time, and starred at the sky.
“Barbara?” Kylee shook her gently. She looked back up at her again, and gave her a weak smile.
“When I was 3 I saw my Dad give my brother a guitar for his 5th birthday…Alex was always his favorite. I was so jealous and my mom saw that so to keep the jealous green eyed monster away from me, she bought me a keyboard, a Yamaha. I loved it and my brother and I would make silly covers all the time and pretend to be rock stars in the middle of our living room, we would drive our mother insane…” She stopped and let out a small laugh.
“One day my brother decided he could teach me a few things on the guitar and that I could pick up the rest as I went. Alex saw how thrilled I got every time he would play for me so he decided to buy me my own guitar, I didn’t know this of course it was suppose to be a surprise, I was 10, he had been saving all summer for it…”Barbara closed her eyes shut and continued talking.
“My father offered to give Alex a ride to the music store, on their way home…a truck flipped over right in front of them and…Alex didn’t make it…” she whispered the last words
“ My dad had some serious injuries but he recovered from them, what he never recovered from… was losing Alex, so he left, and now it’s just me, my mom, and Alex’s guitar. It was the one thing I was able to conserve from him when we had to sell the house and everything in it… the one thing…” she choked out the last words.
“I’m so sorry Barb, oh god…” Kylee wrapped her in her arms, and held her tight. Barbara returned the embrace but let go quicker than usual.
