Our Time Ran Out

The hours are ticking by, ticking by until there will be nothing left; we’re like a time bomb. I can’t run anymore, it’s like everything has been leading up to this, I ran from everything, from my home, my girlfriend, my parents and now the one thing I’m going to stand for something and it’s going to get me killed. If we stand for nothing we’ll fall for anything.

Last night everyone left, everyone alive had walked out of here but Rian had been the last.

“Alex, are you sure you want to do this?” Rian asked,

“I’m sure, it was always me and Jack. We go down together or we don’t go down at all”

“But Alex, this is basically suicide. Would Jack want you to do that for him?”

“He’d do it for me, I know he would”

“Either you’re both going to die, or one of you is. Surely it’s better that one of you survives this?”

“Rian before I met Jack all I did was run, run from everything I lost with no idea where I was going. Jack gave me everything and now I can’t go back to nothing”

“In this whole end of the world thing you’re the best person I’ve met. The world won’t be a better place without you Alex” Rian pats my shoulder with a sad smile before he walks out the large warehouse doors.

It’s only an hour to go now, I take Jack’s hand and we go up to the roof, Jack stumbling behind as his limps make stiff movements. We stand on the roof and watch the sun go down for the last time, it’s only a matter of minutes now and I plan to spend all of them with Jack.

“I’m sorry you know, I’m sorry that I put us in this position and that I wish we could have spent our lives writing music and performing all over the world expect the world doesn’t work like that anymore. This is it and this is us, on top of a warehouse waiting to die but at least I’m with you” just as the sun sets in front of us I pull Jack in for a kiss, pressing his cold lips to mine. Jack almost seems to wake, his eyes hold mine and inside I can feel this stirring coldness, it fights inside of us like wants to take control but I push it back and Jack does the same. I wrap my arms around Jack’s neck and pull him closer, I watch his eyes with a fierce intensity and as I do they change. No longer are they the dead grey but the brown is fighting back until slowly is grains control.

It’s dark around us now, the only light coming from the full moon high in the sky; but I can still see them Jack’s chocolate brown eyes staring back at me.

“Jack...”

“Al...Lex” his voice was crocky, unused but it was there.

“Oh my god, you’re alive!” I hold him tightly in my arms, pressing my head on to his shoulder as I began to cry his arms wrapping around me, I can feel his hot breath on my neck, the beating of his heart and just the warmth of his skin beneath my fingers.

“Alex” he whispers my name and I cling onto him tighter, scared that if I let go he’s going to slip away from me.

“B...But how?” I ask, putting my hand to his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin.

“You” is all he says, pressing our lips together again. The feeling of anything cold and dead trying to fight back is gone and all I can taste is Jack. Pulling back I stare at Jack in almost darkness I realise how much time has passed.

“Jack...” I pull out an old watch that used to belong to my dad, he’d given it to me before I left. The time showing we have barely five minutes left.

“Jack, we’ve got five minutes left”

“Five minutes till what?” Jack asks.

“The explosion Jacky remember? The one that’s going to destroy the whole East Cost, well it goes off in four and half minutes”

“The explosion? What the fuck are you still doing here Alex? You should have gone, saved yourself!” Jack exclaims.

“No, no, I couldn’t leave you, not like that. I said if we weren’t walking about of here together, we weren’t walking about at all”

“Why would you do that? Why would you kill yourself just to stay with me?”

“Because I have nothing else, you’re it Jack, what was I before you? A kid running from everything, never stopping, just always running and then I found you. I can’t go back that, I love you Jack Barakat” I grab his hand and pull him close, our lips meeting for one last time just as the last second passes.
