I’m not really a cool kid, but I hang out with some cool kids so people just happen to know me. I’m the kid who is known, but not actually popular. If you had to put me into a clique I would be with the skater guys. I’m not all hardcore, and into drugs and alcohol, but I do spend most of my time at the skate park and I wear skinny jeans and band t-shirts.
My friends laughed at some dirty joke cleverly made by Ryan while I sat at the very edge of the table picking at the disgusting food we were served. Ryan is pretty much the baddest bad boy you could find. He did drugs, constantly went to parties to get drunk, and I don’t even know how many girls have gotten their hearts broken by him. All of friends wanted to be him for some dumb reason, but I didn’t even like him. He was a douche. But I was not planning on saying that out loud any time soon. Freshman year he had taken me under his wing, and kept me from getting bullied.
“Wyatt are you even on Earth?”
My best friend Kyle waved his hand in front of my face bringing me back to the real world.
“Yeah yeah I’m here. Now what do you want?”
“Ohhh feisty much? What’s got you so grouchy?”
“Your incredibly annoying voice”
We laughed and he smacked me on the back. Kyle had been my best friend ever since I started going to the skate park all the time. His long blonde hair was always in his face, and he constantly had to flick it back.
The bell rang, and I got up to dump the uneaten food into the garbage. As I was walking over to the trash can Ryan came up next to me and slung an arm across my shoulder. He smelled like he had dumped a bottle of cologne on himself, and bad cologne at that.
“Hey buddy boy, what’s up?”
“Just the usual. Throwing away shitty food.”
“Yeah, that’s the best! Don’t you just love it?” He said with sarcasm dripping from his words.
“You coming to the skate park after school again today?”
“Yeah sure, why wouldn’t I?” I go to the skate park everyday except for when it’s raining. I basically live there despite the fact that I’m not even any good at skateboarding.
“No reason, just curious. Anyway I’ll see you later bud.” And with that he left me, catching up to the rest of the group so that he could make more dumb jokes.
My locker was on the complete opposite side of the school, so I had to walk fast so that I wouldn’t be late to my next class. Honors Physics was probably the hardest class I took, and that was because my teacher was some insane genius. People who had graduated and took Physics in college say that this class is harder than college. I groaned at the thought. I was smart, but this class was going to make me work, and it was going to be hard.
I got through the door as the bell rang and sat down in my seat next to the window. I always tried to get a seat by the window because I needed something to distract me from the boring speeches and useless information.
She came in late and stammered excuses to Mr. Hadden and then looked around for a seat. The only open one was right next to me, and I was the last person she would want to sit next to. Reluctantly she sauntered over to the lab table and plopped her backpack on the floor.
She didn’t even look at me, she just took her notebook out sat patiently waiting for the teacher to start talking. Everything about her yelled perfect, but I don’t think she realized it. She had short wispy blonde hair and her eyes were a perfect light brown. She was wearing a black and white flannel shirt that was too big for her, and black skinny jeans, with vans. She was in four of my classes, but she never sits close to me, and she normally stays close to her group of friends. You could say she was now in dangerous territory, even though I’m not dangerous.
The teacher started talking, but everything he said didn’t make it to my brain. I tried to concentrate and take notes, but I kept glancing over at her. I wish I knew her name. She was a transfer student and since we were only a few days into Junior year I never caught her name. I looked up at the board and saw equations written. I copied them down, then looked back at her. Did she notice I was looking? Maybe I should just look away and act like I didn’t care about her presence.
Class continued on extremely slowly until she raised her hand to answer a question. Normally I could care less about some nerd answering a question, but if Mr. Hadden called on her then I would find out her name. And to my luck he did.
“Jessy do you know the answer?”
“There are 32.2 kilometers in 20 miles.” She said like the answer was the easiest thing to figure out. Which it kinda was, but whatever. II didn’t even care about the question or answer, because now I knew her name.
I looked up at the clock and it was already 12:50, only ten minutes till I was out of here. Jessy had still successfully ignored me for almost a full hour. I kinda deserve it though. In homeroom I was trying to hit Kyle with a balled up piece of paper and accidentally hit her square in the middle of her head. She had given me a dirty look, sized me up as some jackass skater boy and ignored me for the rest of the day.
The bell shook me out of my memory from earlier today and I got up quickly from my chair. As I walked out the door I could hear her friends calling her. I looked back quickly, and saw that her eyes were on me. She was actually looking at me. It sort of shocked me but once I put my earbuds in and walked down the hallway I had completely forgotten about her. She was just some pretty girl that I would never end up with anyway. So I walked into Spanish 3 and got ready to be bored again.
