Asking

Somehow I managed to hide the fact that I got beat up until all the bruises and cuts healed.

It had taken almost two weeks, and it was a pain-staking process, literally. My ribs were getting better, but it would take another two weeks for them to heal completely.

I hadn't heard much from Star, but once in a while i would see her in school and smile at her. She really was shy I had noticed, but she might come out of her shell sometime.

Jessy had asked me about my black eye the first day I came back to school, so now I knew that she didn't completely hate my guys. Just to see if I could get her to laugh, I made up some ridiculous story about a circus act gone wrong.

I had thought she was beautiful, but when she laughed and shook her head at me she looked ten times prettier.

After a few days of showing her that I wasn't the scum of the earth like she thought I was, she started talking to me I didn't understand most of the stuff we were learning, so I found myself asking her what to do a lot of the time. I think she got sick of answering me, but she did it anyways which was cool.

At lunch one day Kyle was teasing me about the upcoming dance, and how I would be a loner if I didn't ask anyone.

Jessy might say yes if I asked her, but that was improbable. We didn't even really know each other, she was the perfect, smart, beautiful girl. And I was the troubled skater kid who wasn't even known outside of my group.

I had no chance, but I might as well ask, for all I knew she might actually go with me. I thought the dance was totally bogus, and a waste of time, so the thought of me actually going to it was ridiculous.

My friends teased me along with Kyle, until I finally broke.

"Ok, ok I'll ask someone. Now leave me alone!"

"Feisty much? Geez Wyatt no need to yell. So who ya gonna ask?" Kyle questioned.

"I'm thinking I might ask Jessy Myers." I said in a shy voice.

They finally shut up, which was nice but I still had to get the courage to ask Jessy. I had planned on asking her the next day, and then I heard a commotion.

Someone was standing on one of the lunch tables holding up a sign, but they were turned the other way so I couldn't see what the sign said.

Kyle leaned over and asked me what was going on.

"I have no clue, I can't hear anything." I yelled over everyone's voices.

Then I realized that the person standing on the table was Trent Evans. And as he turned around I could see what the sign said.

Willyougowithme?

It said in bold letters. So Trent asked someone to the dance, I wondered who the unlucky girl was.I asked around our table to see who Trent had asked, until I finally got an answer.

"He asked Jessy." Someone said.

"Which Jessy?" Ryan asked.

"That new chick, Jessy Myers I think her name is." Kyle said.

I just sat there dumbfounded. That jackass had just stolen Jessy. I mean it's not like she was a thing, but seriously, out of all the girls in the school, he had to ask her. What was I thinking anyway? Did I actually think she would go with me? How dumb was I to think that.

Whatever, it's not like I really cared anyway. She was just some chick. Trent always got the girls, and I always got ignored.

I grabbed my backpack and walked away. I didn't care about the whole scene anymore, and I, along with everyone would be late to the next class.

The rest of the day all I heard about was Trent asking Jessy to the dance. It's amazing how fast news gets around at our school, but within an hour everyone in school knew about what had happened.

When school ended I went straight to the skatepark. I probably shouldn't be skateboarding, but that was the only place I felt that I belonged. Ryan, Kyle and a few other guys from our group arrived shortly after me.

Ryan saw me sitting on a bench by myself and he came over to sit next to me.

"What's bugging you kid?" He asked.

"Nothing, I'm all good." I said. Which was complete bullshit of course, but I really didn't want his advice or pity. And just liked I expected, he messed up my already messy hair and then left me alone.

The bowl was part of the skatepark, and that's where everyone sat getting high. I never did drugs, but every single time they would try to convince me to do it.

I wasn't ever affected by peer pressure, I do what I want because I want to do it. As we were sitting in the circle, they passed a joint around, and when it came to me I didn't pass it to the next person like I usually did.

I took it between two fingers and brought it to my mouth. Kyle and all my friends gave me incredulous looks. Don't do drugs kids, they're bad everyone says. I would say don't do drugs, but they aren't bad. But seriously don't do drugs.
