Hank releases Connor from his arms.
"Well, Connor...you did it. You're free." Hank puts his hand onto Connor's shoulder and smiles.
He smiles back.
"Yeah...we're free."
Connor's smile fades."Is something wrong? I thought you'd be happy about this." Hank asks worriedly.
"I'm very happy Lieutenant, I'm just unsure what to do or where to go now. How do I make myself useful?"
"You don't always have to be useful, Connor. You need to learn to enjoy life for yourself. That's the beauty of freedom, you're not forced to work all the time. As for somewhere to go, you can stay with me."
"With you? You mean to live with you?" Connor tilts his head, looking confused.
"What else could I mean?" Hank laughs.
"I wouldn't be a bother?" Connor asks shyly.
"Why in the fuck would you be a bother, Connor? Why are you putting yourself down?"
"I just...there's more than one of me. I thought I was a prototype, I thought I was special. Turns out there could be thousands of androids like me and I'm just one of them. On top of that, my programming almost made me murder Markus after he set us free. I used the emergency exit Kamski told us about, but I'm scared it might happen again. I fear that I really am just a machine, and you wouldn't want a machine living with you...would you?"
Tears form in Connor's eyes.
There's an angry expression on Hank's face. He raises his hand to slap the sense back into Connor, but he hesitates. Instead, he sighs and his angry expression softens. He chuckles.
"You dumb idiot," Hank says softly. "I don't care how many 'Connors' there are. To me, there's only one Connor, and that makes you special. And hey, even if your programming is still active, you're still human like the rest of us."
"Human..."
Connor lifts his head and smiles. He looks into Hank's eyes through his tears and his heart races. He starts to feel an emotion completely new to him. His LED quickly flashes red as he goes from happy to concerned. Connor's eyes dart around as he does a self-check.
"Oh, what the fuck is it now?" Hank whines.
"Nothing, Lieutenant. I thought I felt an error, but I was mistaken."
"Whatever. Let's just go home."
Driving home Hank realizes Connor has been staring at his hands.
"Do you have a hand fetish, Connor?"
"A what?" Connor tilts his head again.
"Nothing. Nevermind." Hank focuses his gaze back onto the road and as does Connor...for three seconds. Connor stares back at Hank's hands. Connor silently thinks to himself.
Why do I want to take Lieutenant Anderson's fingers and put them in my-?
"Connor please stop staring at my hands. I don't know what's so interesting about them to you, but it's making me uncomfortable so can ya just..."
"My apologies Lieutenant." Connor looks out of the window for the remainder of the ride.
As they arrive home, a loud bark is heard through the walls of the house. Connor's face lights up with excitement. Hank sees and can't help but smile.
"You said you like dogs, right?" Hank asks happily.
"Yes. I like dogs. Especially your dog. Sumo is the cutest dog."
Hank unlocks the front door and Sumo comes rushing at him. Sumo jumps onto Hank almost knocking him over and starts licking his face.
"Good boy Sumo..." Hank wheezes.
Connor smiles and laughs lightly. Sumo runs to his food bowl and bOoFs like the good boy he is.
"Ah, someone is hungry." Hank walks over to the cabinet and grabs an enormous bag of dog food, carrying it over to Sumo's bowl with one arm. Connor watches from the front door frame.
"Uuh...Connor, you can come inside you know." Hank informs Connor as he fills Sumo's bowl.
Connor steps inside and gazes around his new home.
"I know it's not much and it's messy as hell, but-"
"I love it." Connor interrupts.
"That's good to hear." Hank grabs a bottle of whiskey from the counter and downs two shots quickly.
"Lieutenant, you shouldn't be drinking."
"I can drink when I feel like it. And call me Hank for fuck's sake."
"Alright...Hank."
