Chapter 9: The Battle

Shadowtail's Pov:

I feel my mind internally start to battle with itself and forget what's going on around me.

Kai's Pov:

Midnight bleats at me making me look at Shadowtail's face. "Oh no you don't." I say knowing that look in her eyes since that had happened to Dagur a few times when he lost himself in battle. 'At least she's not attacking anymore.' I think calmly thinking of a way to snap her out of it. 'let's see maybe...*hears a Night Fury roar* Hiccup that's it.' I think hearing Toothless roar signaling that the others have joined the fight now. "Shadowtail listen Hiccup has joined the fight now you have to snap out of it! If not me then for Berserk and Hiccup. Do this for them they're counting on you. Your Family is counting on you." I say calmly emphasizing the word family. Her ears perk at the mention of Hiccup and family before she snaps out of her mental battle. She looks around for a second and turns Midnight around. "Come on let's go back to Berserk." She says helping Midnight dodge boulders.

Hiccup's Pov:

I spot Shadowtail, Kai and Midnight flying back to shore and get Toothless to fly towards them. He complies and I take in all the damaged ships. 'Tail, what were you thinking?' I ask myself with a groan before catching up to them. "Shadowtail what were you thinking I thought you said you were just going to give them a wake up call." I say frustrated. She rubs the back of her neck sheepishly with a nervous smile. "Well I kinda wasn't. You see I got in my zone and well got a little carried away. Kai kinda broke me out of it though." She says lightly making me scowl. "Shadowtail Sune Valcorin." I start making her ears lay back on her head as Kai and Dagur just watch our exchange. "Do you not remember the last time that happened?" I ask seriously. She scoffs. "You said you wouldn't bring that up again." She says scowling. "Well looks like I have to." I say calmly as she continues to scowl. "Yes I remember and I remember Dad's threat too. Don't bring it up again." She growls at me not happy at all. Midnight banks to the left without Shadowtail's consent before bleating at Toothless that she's going to get Shadowtail to simmer down a little. Toothless relays the message to me making me sigh. "So who's the oldest?" Dagur asks curious I blink having forgotten he was behind me. "Tail is she was born earlier in the year than I was." I sigh calmly. Dagur grunts. "I thought so." He says as Toothless has to make a sharp turn having not seen a boulder from one of the still working catapults.

Shadowtail's Pov:

Midnight lands and I hop off of her back and stalk around the clearing fuming. I'm honestly a little surprised I don't catch on fire considering how angry I am and that I'm practically radiating heat. 'I can't believe he did that.' Kai and Midnight watch as I pace trying to calm down so I can think but the images of the village I was suppose to protect burns because of me. "It wasn't your fault, yeah." Midnight says trying to console me. "Yes it was!" I growl back making her growl at me just before she pounces pinning me down. "Don't growl at me, yeah." She says her eyes slits. I growl. "Then get off." I growl angrily. She doesn't budge she just continues to growl getting closer to my face. I shift into a night fury myself and roll us over growling at her. Midnight is smaller than me since I'm older but she's a real dragon not a Starfray so she pushes me off easily since I weigh much less than her. Then we go at it biting scratching all but firing plasma blasts at each other. Midnight finally submits to me after I get to close to her neck for comfort. Panting I shift back into a human only to be bleeding from scratches everywhere and a few bites on my shoulders and legs but that's hidden by clothing and sparse armor. "Feel better now, yeah?" Midnight asks softly. "Yeah, I guess I feel better." I grumble waving Kai off as he starts to come closer to me. "I'm fine if anything it's Midnight I'm more concerned about." I say moderately grumpy making him go and check on her just as I hear rustling in the bushes a little ways away from us. Holding in a growl I go in the opposite direction of the rustling and leaving the clearing so I can make a round about. I avoid lesser traps that are in my path, before I can smell the rancid breath of an Outcast. Scrunching my nose, I get closer listening for anything out of the ordinary. Seeing the broad back of an Outcast moving towards the clearing I silently tread in the mass of foliage around me until I'm within striking distance. My foot accidentally snaps a twig just as I grip my sword to swing out of the sheath strapped to my waist. 'Crag.' Is my only thought before the Outcast turns around in surprise. Using this to my advantage I lash out with my sword's sharper edge and slice through the flimsy armor covering his midsection. He gasps as my blade scratches him giving me another opening where I slice deeper just above the former cut where his blood trickles over. He positions his own sword to block any more of my attacks making me scoff at the act. His eyes flick ever so slightly behind me, before he seems to get bolder and takes a step or two closer to me. My ears flick behind me just quick enough so I can dodge a burlap sack aimed for my head. Elbowing the other Outcast in the gut I hop to the side and slash at his face only for my sword to meet with his helmet creating sparks. My ears flatten against my head at the grating sound before I jab the first Outcast in the stomach with my sword to end him and throw a dagger at the other male's throat where it meets with his jugular. He gurgles out his breaths before his eyes loll back into his skull as he dies. The first gives loud panting breaths as he slowly dies. unable to bare the thought of his death being torture I grab my dagger out of the others neck and stab it through the first's heart, ending him then and there. Yanking my dagger back out of his throat I stab it into the earth to clean it, before shoving it into my hip holster and moving back to the clearing to find both Midnight and Kai searching for me looking frantic. When Kai spots me, he sprints over to see if I'm okay. "I'm fine I just had to take care of something, really fast." I say tiredly. 'Killing people is mentally exhausting.' I think as he asks where I was. "As I said taking care of something. Such as two Outcasts." I add calmly before he punches me on the shoulder. "Ow, what was that for?" I ask rubbing my left shoulder with my right hand. "You had the both of us worried. We heard fighting, then we couldn't find you. how do you think that made us feel?" He asks giving me a stern look with Midnight beside him. "I'm fine, I can hold my own. I don't need the both of you to fawn over me." I say with a light scowl. Kai snorts. "Whatever. If your good now let's go find our siblings." He says getting on Midnight's back. Giving a soft sigh I comply with his wish and get on Midnight in front of him. He hugs me from behind just before Midnight leaps into the air. She goes above the treetops and I scout for another rider or Hiccup, until we see smoke...
