"Want a ride home?" He asks as we get up after the bell rings.
"Nah, I'm hitching a ride home with my best friends."
"Oh." He bites his lip like he wants to say something but decides against it. "Well I'll see you tomorrow."
"Bye." I call. "Wait!"
He turns around and cocks his head. "Thanks for helping me." I smile gratefully and roll onto my tip toes to peck him on the cheek. "You have no idea how great it feels to have someone."
He blushed. "No problem." He mumbles.
"Aw, is little elephant getting all blushy-wushy?"
"Shut up." He snapped embarrassedly. "Later kitten." He ruffled my hair (which landed him a slap on the hand), and we parted ways.
I craned my neck to look around the parking lot for Cameron's car.
"Hello again, Katrina Marie."
I tensed at the sound of Colette's voice behind me.
"What do you want." I say curtly.
"Nothing, just wanted to say hi to my old friend."
"Please, Colette, I don't want any trouble. Please leave me alone."
"Well to bad, you're getting it." She snarled, dropping the faux friend act.
"Please I--"
"It's a daring move to try to take on three boys at one time. I must say Katrina, you're turning into quite the protégé!"
"I am nothing like you." I growl.
"Are you sure about that?"
"Y-yes." Damn stuttering.
"Hm, it seems the little kitty is unsure of herself."
"I know I am not a deceitful female dog like you."
She laughed, the amused but humorless laugh. "You're all talk and no bite, Katrina.
"I do too bite!" Wow, what a comeback, Katrina. Note sarcasm.
"Sure you do. You needed your precious Jace to save you from my words. How do you expect to fend for yourself it the real world? Where there's no one to catch you when you fall? Where you'll be all alone?"
"Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me. Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me." I repeated.
But I knew that was a lie. Word hurt more than physical injuries. They could heal. Words rock you to the core, are forever inlaid in your brain. They break you until there's nothing left.
"The poor thing has to convince herself she's strong."
"I am strong." I say.
"Then tell me, Katrina, why you were left in ruins after our friendship. After you secretly cut for months. After you secretly had depression, and hid it behind a smile Katrina. Tell me, why?"
My breath hitched in my throat. "How did you--"
"That's not important right now. Just know your trapped Katrina. You and all your friends are my pawns. I'll play them, convince the you're not the girl they think they know. Show them you really are."
