New Student

Monday 6:45 am

My eyes slowly open as I hear my phone ringing, the ringtone slowly gets louder as I fully wake up. Aimlessly searching for my phone on my nightstand, I unplug the charger and look at the caller ID. 'Ma Boi😎' is the name I see taking up the whole screen of my phone, I swipe the green button to answer.

"Hello?"

"Bro Issa get up! You're gonna be late!"

"Wait, what?" I take my phone off my ear and look at the time. It's 6:48!

"Get dressed! I know you're just laying down on your bed, for real hurry you've been tarty too many times this semester!"

"Okay, okay I'm up! I'm so tired, I don't even wanna go to school," I groan.

"Well, what are you gonna do later in life?"

"Not go back to school for sure"

"Cut the sass and get ready, I'll see at the end of your block in 5 mins, not here I'll walk without you," he says in a serious tone.

"You wouldn't dare"

"Try me, Issa Smyth," without hesitation he hangs up the phone. I jump off my bed and get changed and go to the bathroom and brush my teeth and wash my face. Running out of my room I remember, my hair! Going back to the bathroom I hastily do my hair and go downstairs to tie my shoes and bid my father goodbye. I grab my bookbag and walk out the door, heading down the street.

Reaching the end of the street I see Kai, he sees me and starts to walk away. Squinting my eyes run to him. "Hey stop, I'm here already!" I scream while throwing my backpack at him.

"Yeah I know, that's why I started walking."

"You're really mean."

"Well if this 'really mean' person didn't call you then you would have been late knowing you," he says while scoffing.

"So what, nobody likes school anyways"

"I do because I get to see you," he says smiling

"Oh, shut up. I don't fall for that cheesy stuff"

"Welp, I guess you could say I tried."

"Didn't try hard enough"

"Heyyy I was just trying to brighten up your mood"

"I WaS jUsT tRyInG tO bRiGhTeN uP yOuR mOoD,"I mock.

"You know what? Maybe I should have left you, I waited for you AND woke you up."

"Do you want a cookie? Nah I'm just kidding, thanks tho cuz If I was late today Mr.Kim would kill me and I would get cleaning duty for a month."

"Damn that sucks," he says while patting my back.

Getting on the school grounds before the bell we settle to at our seats. While Kai and I were getting ready for advisory I heard gossip about a new student. "Hey did you see him?" a girl said to her friend."Who?"

"The new student, I saw him in the main office, where all the teachers are at"

"Is he cute?" she said with a blush.

I turn to Kai who had his back turned to me facing his guy friends. I patted his back and call his name, "Kai!" He turns from his conversation and tells his friends to hold on,"Yes?"

"Did you hear about the new kid?"

"Yeah, Me and my boys were just talking about him right now."

"Eww don't say 'my boys', it doesn't fit you."

"Either way, what about him?"

"I don't know, I just wanted to know if you heard about him?"

While we were talking Mr. Kim walks into the room and a tall boy in our uniform follows shortly behind. Mr. Kim tells the class that he will be our new classmate and lets him speak. The boy walks to the center of the class. "Hi, I'm Kim Mingyu, I'm from the states," he says shyly with his head down. Mr. Kim coughs and lays his hand on well Mingyu's back," Sit next to Issa, she is also from the states you guys could be friends." Before Mingyu could figure out who I am everyone's heads turn to me with disapproval. He sits at the next desk beside me, putting his bag on the back of his seat.

"Hi, nice to meet you..." he says turning to me with his hand out speaking in English as the girls 'wow" at his language skills.

"I don't speak English, sorry," I say in Korean.

"Oh! Sorry, I just thought that you spoke it since I heard you're from the US," He says apologetically in Korean.

"Nah, I'm just kidding with you!," I say in English chuckling. His face unfolds in shock, slowly curling his lips into a smile.

"I'm Issa Smyth," turning to Kai, who seems very interested in this conversation, " And this is my best friend Kim Jongin."

"Hi, Nice to meet you both," before he fully turns around, he whips his head back to us," Hey do you mind showing me around the school campus?"

"Sure, without a doubt, do you wanna go at lunch?"

"Yeah sounds good"

"Thanks"

"No problem," I smile.

Kai nudges my arm smirking, "Looks like you have a friend"

"I barely know him," I roll my eyes

I look at my phone for the time. 'It's getting close for the next class period...' And without thinking I pack my stuff up and get ready to dash out the class.
