Standing at the bus stop I hear feet pounding against the pavement, hurtling towards me at a violent pace. "LEO!" Piper's arms wrap around me before I can even turn to look at her, strong arms crush me underneath her, "Piper?" I struggle out trying to look up at her beaming face, which, probably, made me smile like an idiot with her.
"THEY ACCEPTED ME!"
"Who?" I choke out feeling my throat starting to be constricted by her right elbow.
"STANFORD!" She screams at my head, just ever so slightly jumping up and down.
"WHAT?"
She lets go of me and looks ready to burst from excitement. She had been planning to go there since before they had meet in middle school, and now after sending in five applications with sixteen recommendations, and taking every AP course she could fit into, and maybe slacking off slightly this year, but by god she got in.
"Piper!" She stops dancing at the stop sign and looks at me still smiling like a goof, "That's awesome!"
She almost grabs hold to crush me again but I shove her away, "Nononono, I need my arms to not be broken, so when I get my letter, I can open it."
Piper quickly nods, "Right, forgot, sorry. I'm just really freaking happy right now!" I smile back at her and we talk about what we will do when we get to college and how we'll set up our dorm rooms and our majors and if we'll go travel Europe any, and when we get on the bus we sit side by side enthusiastically talking about all our plans, that is until she asks what college's I applied for.
"Well, this really big engineering school in California, uh Georgia Tech down in Atlanta, and Vanderbilt down south, I think it's in Tennessee or something near there."
"Why aren't you staying local?"
"To expensive, even the out of state tuition's are cheaper than the stuff around here. Plus the one in California and the one in Georgia are the top two in the country!" I say, not really meeting her eyes, I knew that we had promised to stay in touch but she had always kinda hinted that she thought I was going to stay in the area.
"Hey," She pokes me in the shoulder and I look up, "Why you look so sad? They're going to accept you, don't freak."
I smile at my best friend and laugh, "Yeah, I just figured you would be upset..."
"Because you will be going to one of the best colleges for your career field?" She tilts her head in disbelief at me, "Do you really think I'm that selfish?"
"NO, I mean I thought you would be-"
"Leo, when you get that letter, you better call me immediately and scream my ear off like I almost did to you, and we can freak out together about college together. Okay?" I nod, she smiles at me, and ruffles my hair before whistling innocently, "HEY!"
"What? I didn't do anything." I glare at her, and she glares at me and we glare at each other until a Kant tries to land on my eye and I flail backwards into the window, hitting my head on glass and a loud bang hits my ears almost as hard as my head hit the bus.
Piper is biting back a laugh and I glare at her again, rubbing the growing knot on the back of my head. She shrugs and we ride in a comfortable silence till we get to school.
