I showed up home after my shift still in my uniform.
"There she is hi pumpkin." The nice lady stumbles up to me. She hugs me and I can smell the alcohol rich on her. I help take her back to where her, her husband and Sabrina are sitting. All clearly wasted.
"Dawn I don't think you have properly met these two. This is Adam and Blaine." I nod and start to head off when Sabrina calls to me again. "Go check on our other guest and your sisters. They should be in Emily's room."
I run up the stairs and knock on the door. I hear a muffled response. Then Julie opens the door.
"Go hoe no one wants you here." She laughs and goes to shut the door. But a hand opens it more and I'm met with the face of the 4th guy in the group.
"I'm Nathaniel." He introduces with a smirk.
"Nate it is. Do any of you need anything?" I ask. I don't get an immediate reply so I turn and start walking then I feel warmth getting close to me. I quickly side stepped and turned around to face the person rushing after me. I see Ethan almost directly behind where I was about to stop but trips over his foot. He goes falling forward which lead to me putting my arms out to catch him before he falls down the stairs. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around.
"I thought I was supposed to be the one to catch you when you fall not the other way around." He jokes as he stood and looked at me. "Why don't you smile? Please." He begged once he took notice of my dead expression.
"I smiled at work" I fire.
"Fake one." He rebutted.
"Can I help you because I have stuff to do."
"I'm bored let me come with you."
"No absolutely not."
"Come on please." He pulled out a puppy dog face and looked at me like I just kicked him not saved. I point to the room where his friend is. "Don't worry he'll be busy." I just stared at him for a minute till it hit me.
"Eww gross did not need to know that." He just laughed as I went down the stairs. He followed me with out saying a word but as I step outside the silence ended.
"Are you gonna kill me what are you doing?"
"Going to my room." I said and walked the short distance to the guest house.
"You don't sleep inside with your family."
"Not my family" I pull the key to the mini house from my plant and unlock the door.
"Care to elaborate."
"Not really" I say as I drop my stuff on the couch and make my way to the bathroom.
"Why are you so mysterious and keep things to yourself?"
"Why are you so curious and keep bugging me about things?"
"Touché." He starts walking around as I wash the makeup from me face. I see him pick what looks like a picture frame up.
"Put that down now!" I yell causing him to jump. "I never said you could touch anything." I grab the picture from his hand and put it face down back on the shelf. I sigh and l look back at him.
"Sorry didn't know." I just walk back to the bathroom to take my hair out. "So what's your story?"
"Care to elaborate." I copy from earlier.
"Like why don't you sleep in the house? Why don't you look like them? Why do they treat you different? Why do your friends call you Cinderella? Why do."
"Okay I get it. Sit. Imma change real quick don't touch anything" I say. I quickly change into a running T-shirt and running shorts. I walk out grab the picture and sit next to him on the couch. It's only a loveseat so we're sitting pretty close.
"Once a man named Alexander and a woman named Sophia got married and had twins. A boy and a girl."
"Wait you have a sibling?"
"No comments till I'm done" he sighs but keeps quiet. "Then one night the boy and girl were sleeping peacefully in their beds when a loud noise woke them. They started to cry and Sophia rushed in and tried to silence them. It didn't work and the longer they cried the more silent tears fell from her face. Finally the door swung open. And she was shot. The crying babies were left in the house as fire was set to it. The girl wobbled as much as she could to her brothers bed. They cried as they hugged each other. There was a loud blaring sound outside and men in suits rushed in. They picked up the young children and carried them out of the smoldering house"
"The things recovered from the house were given to the grandparents. They were lucky someone saw the man sneak in and called sooner so not much had caught fire yet. The girl was given a necklace." I showed the one around my neck. "And the boy a pocket watch. Each were something they figured could be kept for a long time. Incase they were ever separated. The kids were given to their grandparents where they received a a photo each." I handed him the picture it was of my parents and me. "The boy has an identical one that's of him instead of her. The grandparents took the keepsakes that the children were given and got the parents first names engraved on the back with the last initial. They were promised by the grandparents that they would go and live with them. By something happened and the kids were sucked into foster care. As they got older many couples turned them down. The girl started getting in fights to defend herself. Her brother was her only friend. By the time they were ten she was almost kick out of the program. Her brother had tried to ask her to be better and she tried. So when they were 11 they finally found a couple interested."
"This family" he asked.
"Nope." He gave me a confused look. " they went out for the dinner and went back. The little girl snuck down to overhear the conversation while he brother was telling some of the friends he made. She overheard them say the can only take one of them." I stopped and took a deep breath. "They wanted the girl so she ran down the stairs as fast as she could and stared at the couple the lady that set up the interview looked down at the young child and said do you hear that they want you. So the girl did what any younger sister would do she told them no. She said take my brother please he needs you. He needs a family. A stable life. Please. So they took the brother and left the girl. Couple years later Jeremiah showed up. And adopted her into this family. He helped her try and find her brother and learn more about her parents but a month after the adoption he died."
"So their that's me. I've never told anyone that story before. I don't even know why I told you. None of my friends even know this. All they know is I was adopted. So yeah happy." Instead of saying anything he just got up and left.
