After a bit the dogs gave up so Cody and Angel were able to eat and sleep. Cody curled around her and purred until they were both asleep. Angel had a strange dream. It was about Sunrise on a cooler Greenleaf morning when she was in the lake, fishing like a tribe cat. She had a fish out on the bank and it turned into a huge eagle, grabbed her up, and flew off to the Fingered Ones houses.
These houses weren’t what she had seen before. They were smaller, a lot smaller. The roofs still sloped upward but they were cloth and white. The Fingered Ones were milling around looking for things through piles of rubble. Fingered Ones were hurt and screaming while others were safe and sleeping on mat like things under the white cloth houses. There was smoke coming from some of the places; Angel thought “Fire,” as soon as she saw the smoke.
Another cat was standing next to her watching. It was her mother Smokie. Angel looked over and gasped in shock and excitement. She moved closer, purring and rubbing on her “Oh mom. How I’ve missed you.”
“Yes my dear child, I can tell you have.”
“I’m glad to see you again.”
“As am I Angel.” Smokie purred and smiled as she looked out over the vast camp of White Tents of which the Fingered Ones were living in. Some of the Fingered Ones were now lining up for something that smelled a lot like dung to her but they gladly ate it and Angel walked off thinking about why they were now living like that.
At that point Angel woke up as the chill of the morning soaked into her young bones, Cody out getting food for them. Angel sure was glad that he was there. She just then sat by the mountain’s edge and watched the sun rise over the horizon.
For hours Angel was sitting there, it felt like she was as old as the first member of the Tribe of Endless Sky. She remembers how they were come to be, her mother had told her that story many times for she was a tribe cat that Sea had taken in so she could kit in a safe place.
It was a cold night when the cats first came together. This was over many many seasons ago. They all were escaping from a place where the Fingered Ones had kept them. There were rows and rows of cages that had all cats in them. Big cats, small cats, scrawny cats, fat cats, sleek cats, fluffy cats, nice cats, and mean cats among all other types of cats. All the doors swung open and they raced toward the door and the most helpful one, Shilo, yowled “Meet in the forest as dawn tomorrow and I will help you all.” They all trusted him so they did as he said.
That next day at dawn the cats were in a clearing in the forest and from then on they were known at the Tribe of the Endless forest because none of them had ever been out of the forest since that day. They established camp, flourished, and then eventually made their way to believing in the Tribe of Endless sky which held all of their ancestors. Thorn is really the only one who does not think there is a Tribe of Endless Sky but he keeps that to himself.
Angel sat there the first rays of sun hitting her fur, making her shiver a bit. As the sun rose higher and higher the warmer she got. She closed her eyes sleepily. There was a loud noise from below, the dogs. They had scented her. The pack leader, she found out whose name was Kyo, was in the lead racing toward her. Kyo howled and the rest of the pack followed him. As Angel heard them near she panicked. The lovely she cat thought about an eagle and there was a flash of light. She flapped her wings and took off into the air, soaring way about the treetops and close to the mountain.
The dogs eventually made it up to the ledge she was sitting on to find it empty. Angel landed on the next ledge over, making sure she was safe from them and looked around for Cody.
