I was curled up in the corner of my scruffy bed, the sheets over my head stained with god knows what, with my tiny hands covering my throbbing ears. Shouting and screaming was taking over our small, terrace house, just like it did every night.
My big brother came running into my room and relief flooded through me. He jumped onto my bed and wrapped his arms around me, quietly singing my favourite song. I was safe when I was with Jack, he would always protect his little sister. Or so he told me...
All of a sudden, the loudest bang you've ever heard shook through the house. Then there was just silence. It was like this for at least 4 minutes, with just the sound of Jacks soft voice humming the tune to "Budapest', the only song that would make me relax a little.
Then, we heard someone running up the stairs, their footsteps getting louder and louder, closer and closer to my bedroom door. Just as we thought they were about to enter, they stopped very suddenly.
Jacks humming gradually stopped until all that could be heard was the extremely heavy breathing of whoever was stood outside my door. The door knob started to turn very slowly until the door swung open with a thunderous bang, and my step dad stormed into my box-sized room.
"JACK?!!" His voiced boomed.
Jack gulped next to me, and slowly started getting up off the creaky bed. Whilst doing this, I dared take a look at the monster of a stepdad who was stood in front of the bed.
He had more or less a bald head on top, with just a little patch of hair right in the centre of his skull, then coming out the back was a knotted pony tail, swinging side to side as he tried to sort out his breathing. He had one tooth, which was black and yellow, and a lot of stubble - bordering beard, all over his face. His breath stunk and spit was flying out of his mouth with every breath he took. What a disgusting creature.
Before I knew it, Jack was being pinned up against the wall with my stepdad screaming right in his face. What the hell???
I started shouting then, telling him to let go, but luckily, Jack was stronger than he looked and managed to get himself away from the ugly monster.
Whilst Jack and My Stepdad fought, a thought hit me.
Where. was. my. mum?!
I pushed past the two fighting men and starting running as fast as I could down the stairs, I didn't even have time to actually wonder why my stepdad was so angry, or why he was taking it out on my brother, or my mum.
As soon as I got downstairs, darkness engulfed me. Why were all the lights off? Where was my mum? Why is their wedding picture smashed on the floor?? Yes, they argue constantly, but I've never seen my step-dad in this state. My mum would just usually come running up stairs to make sure me and Jack were ok. But not this time.
I turned into my kitchen and my feet suddenly stopped working. The breath was knocked out of me as tears sprang to my eyes. Right in front of me was my lovely, heart-warming mother about to kill herself.
There was a glass full of water in one of her hands, whilst the other had about 15/16 different pills in it. However, she wasn't moving. She was just stood there staring at both of her hands, and not even flinching when I said her name.
"Mum?" My voice came out hoarse, and almost silent.
"Mum?? Mum!! MUMMMM!!!"
I shot upright, a cold sweat clinging to my body. I realised I was actually screaming Mum, which was why (I presume) my auntie Jo, came running in.
"Faith!! Come here darling it was just a dream, come here." She opened her arms and pulled me towards her, gently rocking me side to side. "Your mums fine, she's down in Cornwall at the minute, why don't you give her a ring, she might still be awake?"
I didn't reply, just shook my head and started to get out of bed. My clothes were clinging to my sweaty body, and my brunette hair was sticking to my face. That was the re-occurring nightmare that always came; constantly reminding me of the events that happened that night. I should've got used to it by now, but every time it did come, they just seemed to get worse.
I stripped off and jumped into the cold shower, hoping that it would soothe my boiling hot body a little, and it did. I stayed in there for at least half an hour, but by the 15 minute point, I had to turn the heat up as I was starting get a little bit chilly. I eventually did get out though, and automatically checked my phone to see what time it was, and if I'd got any messages off anyone. But guess what? There was nothing. I was so popular!!! (Note sarcasm).
Seeing as I was now wide awake, I decided to go for a stroll. My neighbourhood was quite nice, so I didn't have to worry about getting mugged or anything!
