"Ooh look at her face! Tillie was telling the truth!"
"Seems like it was a fun night on the street for you, Tyla!"
"Charming your way into the slut's pants, aren't you Tillie?"
"Alright, what's going on?" Tyla pulled Tillie over to stop on the side of the hall. She'd been hearing nothing but hateful comments all day and that wasn't exactly new. But what had never happened before, was Tillie's name being dragged into the comments.
"I might've told off our health class for being mean to you," Tillie suggested and Tyla smiled and shook her head.
"My hero," Tyla said, pulling Tillie in for a hug, and leaving her arm to rest over her shoulders as they walked.
"Not exactly. I just gave them more insults to shout at you apparently." Tillie didn't seem to understand that Tyla didn't care that Tillie wasn't successful. She was touched enough that she tried.
"Doesn't matter. They don't matter to me," Tyla said and Tillie blushed at the hidden words in Tyla's sentence. You're the one that matters to me.
"I say we go out on that mystery date today," Tyla decided, guiding Tillie away from her bus and towards Tyla's car.
"What about Tracey and Kassandra?"
Tyla shrugged absentmindedly. "I'll just tell them to go find some friends to hang out with," Tyla decided and pulled her phone out to text her siblings. She waited for them to agree and tell them what friends they are leaving with, before ditching them with Tillie.
"Now will you tell me where we are going?" Tillie asked, trying to look around the road for anything that could potentially be where Tyla was taking her.
"You'll see in a minute. And looking around for roadsigns won't do you any good," Tyla gave her a half hint. Which only seemed to make Tillie more confused. So she sat in silence until Tyla parked the car right at the neck of the woods.
"The woods? You aren't bringing me out here to murder me are you?" Tyla threw her head back and laughed.
"No, that wasn't my plan. I wish I could take you to a fancy restaurant or something, but I'm kinda broke at the moment," Tyla said and got out of the car. Tillie followed and they intertwined their hands before walking into the woods.
"So, what are we going to do?" Tillie looked around at all the trees, kicking sticks as they walked.
"You know, couple things. Kissing in trees like the song, maybe carving our initials into a tree..." Tyla listed, Tillie laughed.
"Sounds good," she said before breaking their hands apart and running in front of Tyla to get a head start at climbing the tree in front of them. And she was moving quickly.
"Hey!" Tyla screamed and ran after her, trying to catch up but the laughter that followed from Tillie was distant. Making Tyla groan as she realized just how good Tillie was at climbing trees.
When she finally caught up. Tillie was sitting on a branch, smiling lazily and helping Tyla sit next to her.
"How.. are you.. so fast?" Tyla asked, taking deep breaths between every couple of words. "Jesus Christ."
"What can I say? I lived in the trees when I was younger," Tillie said, as if telling a fantasy story.
There was so much crashing into flames in their lives, but that didn't matter. Not when they could be hand in hand, watching the blue birds sing.
If only that was how life worked.
That night, Tyla, Tracey, and Kassandra returned to their apartment. According to the Newton's, Tyla's injuries were healing well enough that they didn't have to continue watching them and Tyla didn't want to continue intruding on their home.
