"Isla Kendriks?" the man started. He stopped chewing on his sunflower seeds to look up at me.

"A girl?" he asked in disbelief. He mumbled something under his breath, something sounding like 'didn't know we'd be acceptin' girl scouts now.'  I scoffed. "What do I look like, a twelve year old boy?" I remarked, and immediately regretted it the second it came out. He looked like the one in charge, and the one in charge can always send you back home. To jail.

To my surprise, he just rolled his eyes and continued. "My name is Mr. Sir. Whenever you speak to me, you will call me by my name." I couldn't help it and a smile formed on my face. He grumbled to himself, 'yeah, very original reaction.'

Mr. Sir guided me around outside, and I could see all the boys staring in disbelief. A few started talking about me, a few ignored me. "You see any guard towers? Electric fences?"

"No, Mr. Sir." I replied, not fully paying attention to him whilst taking in my surroundings.

"You wanna run away? Go ahead, I won't stop ya. Be my guest." he said. I suddenly stared at him, confused.

"Ain't nobody run away from this place. Know why? We got the only water for a hundred miles. You run away, them buzzards'll pick you clean by the end of the third day."

I widened my eyes. They travelled down as they saw Mr. Sir putting his hand on his gun.

"Oh, this here? I wouldn't waste a bullet on ya. This here's for yellow spotted lizards."

We walked into a room where he gave me two sets of hideous orange jumpsuits, explaining that one was my work clothes and the other was my relaxation set. I had to dig a hole every day - five foot deep, five foot in diameter.

The last time I remember, camp wasn't like this.

Mr. Sir introduced me to another counsellor named Dr. Pendanski, who then began telling me about the tent and the warden. I'd assumed it was the same speech he gave every new camper. As he was talking, a group of three boys walked up to us.

"Hey, mom.. who's the girl?" a slender dark-skinned boy wearing glasses asked Dr. Pendanski. He was with a larger dark-skinned boy and a skinny brown-haired boy with a toothpick in his mouth. The one with the toothpick was eyeing me, and it made me incredibly uncomfortable. "Boys, this is Isla. She'll be staying with you in D-Tent." he replied. "Isla, meet Rex, Alan, and Theodore."

"Uh, hi." I said, surveying the boys I'd be staying with for the next 24 months.

"Yo, the name's X-Ray. That's Squid, and that's Armpit. He pointed to the two boys on either side of him. I gave a nod to each.

Dr. Pendanski turned to face me and said, "Well, they all have their little nicknames, but I'd rather call them the names society will recognize them by."

The boys led me into a small tent with multiple cots. X-Ray [I'm guessing I remembered that correctly.] pointed to a tiny cot sporting a mysterious stain. "That was Barfbag's bed, man."

"Nope, no way am I sleeping on that." I stated, looking at Pendanski. He couldn't possibly let me sleep on someone else's disgusting fluids, could he?

The boys all chuckled. "Get used to it, Isla. You're gonna be stuck here for a while, and eventually you'll learn to take what you can get."

I was introduced to the rest of the guys. A hispanic boy named Jose [they insisted on me calling him Magnet], a soft-looking kid named Stanley [Caveman, I think it was?], and a very young boy who wouldn't speak at all [They called him Zero, because apparently that was all that was happening inside his head.].

The last person I was introduced to was a tall, slender boy named Ricky. They called him Zigzag - for reasons that were obvious. His hair was crazy, and his eyes were wild, big blue eyes. He stared at me for a moment before setting his stuff down on his bed.

Did I ramble?

You didn't see that.

I set my bag on my cot, unpacking a few basic things such as my headphones & my phone, (which I was allowed to keep apparently!) my sleeping pills, my deodorant and my chapstick. Most of the boys just watched me doing this, to which I waved my hand in dismissal. They kinda just looked away.

A loud bell rang - the dinner bell. The boys gestured for me to follow, and we all walked in silence. I'm guessing they were tired from their long day of digging, but you never know.

I got in line and was served some uh- probably non-edible- slop? I honestly had no words to describe it. From what I could smell, I didn't even want to put it near my mouth.

"Come here, Isla. This is where you sit." Ricky - I mean, Zigzag - gestured to the empty spot next to him. Taking the seat, I watched the boys as they ate. It looked like they were enjoying the food - I just shivered at the thought of eating it.

I wasn't stuck up or anything, but if you saw what they were serving, you'd think it would suit a dog better as well.

"Hey, so uh, you didn't dig today. You wouldn't mind givin' up your bread to somebody who did, now would you?" X-Ray took the bread from my plate and gave me a small fake smile. I didn't care all too much. The boys were almost finished eating when they noticed I hadn't even taken a bite.

Squid spoke up first. "Isla, Darlin', you better eat up. At least take a few bites, it ain't so bad."

I looked down at my plate and poked the mystery slop with my fork.

Will I make it through these two years of my life?
