I was pulling into the driveway when I heard Bella’s car loudly coming up behind me. She cut me off and I heard her laugh loudly.
“Show off.” I rolled my eyes.
She scoffed. “Nobody likes a hypocrite, Edward.”
I chuckled. I knew she’d love having a fast car eventually. I’ll have fun saying ‘I told you so’ all night.
“Hi, love,” I greeted Bella at the house, opening the car door for her. “How’s Renée today?”
“She’s great... She’s been looking at houses.”
I was caught off guard. “Really? She’s thinking about moving here?”
“Not just thinking. She already decided.” Bella sighed. “She doesn’t have anyone back in Jacksonville. And no matter how much she hates it, her whole family is in Forks now. She doesn’t want to live without us anymore. She wants to be with me, and she wants to get to know you and our daughter. How could I say no?”
I held her hand as we walked inside the house. “You’re right, I just wasn’t expecting that. Did she say when?”
“As soon as possible. With me helping, it should be quick.
“With us helping,” I corrected her. “When she finds a place she likes, let me know.”
She nodded. “Where’s Alice?”
I went with Alice to Port Angeles before sunrise to get a few things for the wedding, but she didn’t come home with me. I decided not to tell Bella yet, to wait until we were out of earshot of our daughter. I lied smoothly. “I dropped her off. She said she needed to do something that’s supposed to be a surprise for everyone.” I rolled my eyes. “I don’t know.”
“Classic Alice.”
We heard Jacob’s deafening snores on the couch in the living room. His dreams were happy, all clouded with Nessie’s face.
I smiled at how much he cared for my daughter. Nothing brought him more joy than she did. I knew the feeling.
I was surprised to find that Renesmee was not sitting by him. She was reading in my old bedroom upstairs.
Deciding to take the opportunity, I slowly made my way to the wolf’s side and knelt down as I shook his shoulder. “Jacob. Jacob!”
He gasped, falling to the floor with a thud. “Edward, what the hell?”
“Shh! We need to talk.”
He stood up, rubbing his eyes tiredly. “And you just couldn’t wait? You had to wake me up?” He scoffed. “What time is it?”
“Almost seven.”
He gazed out the window to the oncoming sunset. “Oh, wow. I didn’t mean to sleep that long... Talk about what?”
“Not here. Come on, Bella.” We were already gone, but Jacob was still standing there, stretching to wake himself up.
“What’s going on?” Jacob jogged out of the house to catch up to us.
Before we faced him, I mouthed to Bella, Go along with it. She looked confused for half a second until Jacob came up behind us. She was definitely much better at her poker face.
I gestured to the north, silently saying we should go out further to talk.
“All right. Jacob...” I sighed, turning to him. “Bella and I wanted to discuss our wedding gift to you.”
