As she grew older, Nettie sort of lost that sign of hope. Nothing changed and her school wasn't making it any better. Ever since she was little she never had many so called,"Friends." Basically all her classmates ether didn't understand her and didn't know her story, or were jealous of her good looks. The popular girls saw her as,"Useless Potential."
And the fact that her brother was popular and everyone knew him just made her even more upset. Her brother calmed her down though, telling her that it was gonna be alright but that just angered her even more because he would never understand her. No matter how much he tells her he does, he never will. It reminded her about the saying that you don't fully understand someone until you walk a mile in their shoes and how much that was true.
