I let out a ragged breath as Charlie looks at the heart. He crouches down to look at it. He looks up at me. I stare at the box with an unbearable pain in my own chest. I go on to my knees. I just stare at the box. It makes sense to me now why the girl had her chest ripped out. The monster wanted to send me a message. He knows where I am. He knows who I am. He can destroy me in moments. Charlie calls his partner. I get up off of the floor and walk across the room to the stairs. I sit on the bottom step and pull my legs to my chest. Charlie looks over at me, a pained expression on his face. He gets off of the phone and walks towards me.
"Charlie just don't," I almost whimper. He stops in mid step. He sighs and turns around to go outside. I watch as he leaves the front door open. I close my eyes as two tears fall down my face. If he knows where I am then he can hurt Charlie. If he hurt Charlie I wouldn't be able to live with myself. I feel my body shiver even though it isn't cold. I open my eyes and get up. Something draws me back to the box. I grab one of the pens off of a side table near the stairs. I walk slowly back to the box. The bloodied heart lays alone in the box. Charlie put the note on top of one of the box flaps that sticks straight out. I crouch down and look at the box. Its not all that big but it has to have an address. I move the other three flaps with the pen. The Los Angeles address is on it. I look for the return address and what not. Its sent from a PO box. I sigh. Something tells me that no one living owns the box. I sigh and get back up. All of this seems a bit odd.
How did he know where I was? Did he know that I lived with a rich detective? What was his major plan? I cross my arms. Something is just wrong. I mean other than the fact that there is a free serial killer out there. Charlie and Ted walk inside of the house. Ted doesn't look at the box. He looks at me in almost fear.
"We were never introduced, I'm Elizabeth," I smile as kindly as I can. I hold out my hand.
"Ted," he hesitates in taking my hand. He finally shakes it and then quickly lets go. He walks away quickly leaving Charlie and I alone.
"Sorry about Ted, he handles my settlement money," Charlie smiles.
"Seems like a nice guy, I'm sure he just isnt used to getting human hearts in boxes," I shrug. We both stop and look at each other. I hear cars pulling up to the house.
"Look Charlie I should leave find somewhere safe," I say looking deep into his eyes. I feel a little weird. I'm not one for romantics. Or at least I don't think so. If I were I'm sure my boyfriend would be looking for me right? Well maybe not? I think myself out of moments apparently.
"No I think you should stay here, I can protect you, I'm a cop who went to jail I know things," he smirks slightly.
"I'm a girl from god knows where with no memory whose seen enough blood and gore for a lifetime I think I know what's best for me," I sigh and cross my arms. Why am I saying this I want to stay? Maybe catch him with nothing on next time out of the shower.
Did I just have that thought?
"I can make you stay here," he takes a step forward. I watch Reese walk in with a group of officers.
"Fine," I smile.
"Where's the box?" Reese asks.
"Over there," Charlie points to the box. He stares into my eyes. I stare back. Out Of the corner of my eye I see Reese roll her eyes and move towards the box.
"He knows where you live now we should move you," Reese says as she crouches down reading the note.
"He can protect me," I keep my eyes on Charlie. He smiles.
"Okay.....We better take this to the lab for testing," Reese stands up as the team takes the box.
"Reese what time is it?" Charlie asks. This stare down is almost annoying.
