Verianda tried to appear calm as her guards escorted her through the vine covered archway her people called The Rift, a portal between two worlds. Her skin crawled as she passed under the ancient stone, but this time it wasn't because of the magic wreathed throughout the air, but the thought of what was about to occur.
She glanced at the tiny bundle she held in her arms and barely suppressed a phase, when she phased into her true form she wouldn't be able to hold the child any more, she didn't want to harm the baby if she lost control of her emotions and phased.
"I'll hold her," the low male voice cut into her thoughts, pulling her back to reality. Reluctantly she handed the baby into her mates waiting arms, whatever pain she was feeling, Callum would feel the same, she realised as she saw the look of pain on his face and felt his heartbreak through their bond. Oh Veria are we doing the right thing? Callum's thoughts crept despairingly through her mind, as they neared the end of their journey.
The human world was a gray place full of death and violence, hated by the Shifters. That was why it was the perfect hiding place, know one would suspect the child to be hidden here.
The building looked cold and unwelcoming. The human script on the polished glass door was senseless to Verianda but her pack members that could read human script, had assured her this place would shelter the child.
"No." Callum growled as they neared the building.
"I thought I could but I can't." His arms tightened around the baby protectively, "there has to be another way," his gold eyes, the only indication of his true form, cut through Verianda with their pain and hopelessness, a reflection of her own emotions.
"It is the only way, do you think I would do this if it wasn't?" She gazed at the perfect little face of her baby girl, marveled at the white gold curls on her child's head, so like her own. "It is the only way." She whispered again, a tear trailing down her cheek.
