Kailey had finally gotten up the courage to ask Peter to be her date to the school dance. Of course, she ended up using the word date despite the fact she didn't want to when she initially wrote out what she wanted to say.

Yes, she wrote it out.

And yes, despite her careful planning, it was still a disaster.

"Hey, Pete. I gotta ask you a question." Kailey said, walking up to him while he was at his locker, which, conveniently, was really close to hers.

"Hmm? What's the question?" He replied, looking at her with a small smile. When she made eye contact with him, though, that was when her carefully planned question she was going to ask him left her mind.

"Uh..do-um..could you be my date to the dance?" As soon as she said the word date, her face went red and so did Peter's. "I-I-I didn't mean to say date, I just..could you go with me to the dance? As friends, not as dating or anything-" She started rambling and did herself a favor and closed her mouth. Realizing how nervous she was (and thinking it was a bit cute) Peter nodded.

"Yeah, definitely. It'll be fun." Peter said in that adorable way of his. Kailey nodded quickly, chuckling nervously.

"Alright, awesome. Sorry for being so awkward when I asked. I'll see you at lunch." Kailey gushed, turning and heading to her next class. Peter smiled as he watched her go for a few seconds, then quickly closed his locker and headed to his next class as well, which was the opposite way of hers.

"Mom, seriously. No pictures. No anything. If he rings the doorbell, don't answer! I'll do it!" Kailey reminded her mother. They had talked about it the night before, and Kailey's father reluctantly agreed, but Kailey's mother brushed it off.

"Honey, please. You don't honestly expect me to agree to those terms, do you? I have to get at least one picture! You've had a crush on Peter since you met him! When you guys get married, you'll look back at this picture and be so happy!" Kailey's mother replied with a teasing tone.

Kailey's face went red, and she turned away from her mother, rolling her eyes. "We're not even dating. We're not going to get married, Mom. Please." Kailey said, trying to keep her voice calm and not stutter from embarrassment. Her mother didn't believe it and hugged her.

"Honey, the way you talk about Peter is the same way I talked about your father in high school when we met. It makes me so happy to watch you talk about him. Please. One picture. You'll look back on it and be happy I took it." Her mother appealed. Those words got to her, and she sighed.

"Alright. Fine. One picture. That's it." Kailey reluctantly agreed. Her mother smiled brightly and fixed Kailey's hair happily, pushing it to the side so she could see her face.

"One picture. Or as many as I can take within a couple seconds." Kailey smiled at her mother's response and nodded. Before she could speak and say a funny remark to her mother, the doorbell rang. Kailey nearly jumped, and her mother chuckled a bit. "Go get it, Kailey." She whispered, since Kailey was just standing there, staring at the door.

Snapping out of her trance, she nodded quickly, grabbed Peter's boutonniere then went to the door, unlocking it with slightly trembling hands and then opening it.

When the door opened, Peter quickly straightened his posture and gripped the small rose in his left hand tightly and the corsage he had gotten for Kailey in his right hand even tighter. He was just as nervous as Kailey was, but that fear that he felt completely disappeared when he saw Kailey in her dress, holding the boutonniere she got for him in her hands somewhat awkwardly. When he saw her, he smiled, hoping the gesture would make the moment less awkward for both of them, and it worked.  Kailey smiled back, then opened the door fully and handed him the boutonniere. But he didn't take it.
