Chapter 8

"How was the date? It was horrible, wasn't it?" Suzanne asked and stated at the same time. "Oh I should have warned you that it was a bad idea! You went on a date with a teacher, an older guy with intellectual speeches and barely smiles. Hell, he was probably a total grump throughout the entire day wasn't he? Oh please just tell me, tell me all about it and I promise I won't tease you about it. It must have been terrible." I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared down at it in disbelief. Maybe if she would shut up for a moment I might be able to tell her but she's going on and on about it. Does she truly think I had such a terrible time?

"Suzanne, SHUT UP!" I yelled into the phone before bringing it back to my ear and hearing silence from the other end. "Thank you." I blew out a relieved breath. "The date was wonderful and fun, there was no dreaded silence and he certainly didn't act like a grump."

"Are you sure because sometimes we think he is smiling but then it turns out he's just itchy and can't scratch?"

I had to muffle a giggle at her words. It was so like Suzanne to say something like that.

"No, he wasn't itchy unless he laughs all the time when he can't scratch. Seriously Suzanne, it was fun, we went to a berry farm for breakfast, then we hit the Zoo and he took me to a restaurant for dinner. It was seriously fun." I was met with silence after that and frowned. "Suzanne, are you still there?" Silence...

Great, I think my friend just had a heart attack or something. Shrugging off the thought, I just hung up instead and slipped into my sheets on my bed. I couldn't wait for movie night though, that was one thing I had to look forward to after a long day of boredom.

"Did you kiss?" That was the first thing that left June's lips when she walked into the kitchen the following morning. I was still barely awake yet, having been up until twelve daydreaming about my date. My mother was already baking up a storm in the kitchen and I was just in time to get the first batch of chocolate chip cookies. It was delicious but at my sister's question, I choked on a piece and struggled for a full minute to get my breathing under control.

"June, don't ask your sister questions like that." My mother scolded but I could see the amusement in her eyes before she sent me a sly grin. "Wait until the men are out of the house then you may ask for details."

"Mom..." I groaned while my little sister started giggling.

"How was the date sweetheart?" Well, there goes the idea of not discussing my date with the men. My father strolled in through the door before plopping down on the chair across from me with my sister sitting at the island with her eyes focused on us. She was still giggling.

"It was fine." I muttered and practically shoved the entire cookie into my mouth.

"Come on, you have to give us more than that." My mother begged and actually leaned on the island to focus her gaze on me completely. "He looked rather charming and very attractive; I bet it was very romantic." She even went as far as to wink, making me wince.

"Please, mom, don't do that again." I muttered and swallowed the cookie. "Fine, the date was fun." I shoved another cookie in my mouth before they could force me to say anything more.

"You know, girls your age usually can't wait to share every detail of their date with anyone willing to listen." My father was kind enough to point out, having probably had to experience Suzanne's gushing about her first date while I was gone. She apparently spent a lot of time at my house and in my room, claiming to miss me too much. It was believable, seeing as Suzanne saw me as a sister just like I did her.
