Chapter 10
"Hello..."
Chuckling at the groggy voice at the other end, I slowly lowered myself onto the swinging couch on the porch.
"Hey Phoebe... it's Hope." I said and heard a sound, like something hitting the floor.
"Ouch... shit! No, Gavin stay in bed. It's a friend from California."
I heard Phoebe mutter in the background before she finally returned to the line.
"Sorry Hope, I was just sleeping after a rather eventful party."
I chuckled again.
"I can tell. Am I interrupting something? I could call another time?" I suggested, feeling a little bad about waking her up. I knew the time difference wasn't a big help but I was afraid I would forget to call by tomorrow. It was already around eleven at night and William's friends were still acting like they just woke up. Currently, they were having an intense board game going on and I was the first one to be eliminated.
"No, no, it's absolutely fine. I was meaning to call you anyway. I've sent your things to you and a little something extra." She gushed.
I smiled at the excitement in her voice and rolled my eyes.
"I called to congratulate you." I stated and heard her dropping onto something. "I saw a woman walking around with stilettos that looked rather familiar." I grinned at her sharp inhale.
"They're wearing it?" She whispered and I had to chuckle.
"Well, it is for sale, don't you think someone would be buying?"
"Yes!" She cleared her throat. "I mean, I see them on the display tables and all but I honestly never saw anyone walking around with them on before. Gavin said it would take time for them to become popular but... someone's wearing them..." She sighed out the last part and for once, I felt truly happy for the strange creature I had lived with. We weren't friends when I lived with her, because frankly, you learn too much about a person when you're permanently breathing the same air. Now, thinking about it, I could almost classify her as a sister, or cousin maybe.
"I told you, you would win. I mean, your designs are stunning!" I exclaimed and started laughing with her when she squealed like a little girl. "I hope this means you're finally moving out of that sardine can I used to call home?" I questioned hopefully once we calmed down.
"Well, actually..." She cleared her throat, seeming uncomfortable.
"Come on, tell me." I encouraged and she let loose another squeal.
"Sorry Gavin..." She whispered before she finally muttered something into the phone.
"What? I didn't catch that?" I asked and waited as she inhaled deeply.
"Gavin, my boss, asked me to marry him. I'm moving in with him next week and we're planning to get married as soon as possible."
I remained silent as her words slowly made their way through my mind. She was marrying her boss? Is that even legal? Is that a good idea? Thinking about her usual lifestyle, I could actually understand why someone would want to immediately claim her as his but... No, Hope, she's happy. I smiled at the thought of her finally settling down and having her own kids.
"I'm happy for you, Phoebe. You deserve someone to take care of you." I finally said, having made up my mind. Who was I to judge her for moving so fast? I was freaking out about Will being late because I missed him and I barely met him more than two weeks ago.
