You might still want to kill me
Lexie was screaming for help. She couldn't move and help him herself because she knew that if she was to try anything she'd injure herself and the baby in the process. But as a surgeon, her second nature was to help. It was to fix and yet, she couldn't do anything to fix Mark or save him. She was lying there, useless.
"Come on!" She yelled. "You can't leave me. Not now. Not when all your children need you. Please, just breathe." She wanted him safe, she needed him alive, her children needed him alive.
She could hear the sirens of the ambulances and the police cars. They had to come faster. If they could just arrive fast enough maybe then Mark would be okay. Maybe he'd live. Maybe she'd get to tell him she loved him again.
Suddenly Mark opened his eyes. He looked at her and closed them, but now Lexie could see his neck move as he breathed.
The medical personnel came to her first. Lexie knew she was mostly fine, she wasn't the one who had received the direct impact.
"Get to him first." She told the paramedic.
"M'mam, just let us do our job. We know what we're doing." The medic told her.
Lexie grabbed the man's hand and forced him to stop. "I know you're doing your job, but you're doing it wrong. The car hit his side. And until a minute ago, he wasn't breathing so help. Him. First."
"M'mam, just stay calm we'll take care of both of you." His colleague said as he went to see Mark.
The medic put a neck brace around Lexie's neck to stabilize it before he and another medic placed her on the gurney and they drive off in direction of SGMW.
As they drove there, all Lexie could do was pray to God that her baby had made it and that Mark was going to be okay. She didn't know how she'd live without either of them.
~ 5 minutes later~
Lexie was rolled out of the ambulance and into the ER by April.
"33 years old female. Around 7 months pregnant. No apparent head injury. No broken bone." The medic informed April.
"Lexie?" April asked in shock. But the feeling of shock only was apparent for a fraction of second as the trauma surgeon regained her usual composure and directed the resident and intern present around her. "Let's get her into bed 5. Get me a general consult!"
Lexie grabbed April's hand as they licked the wheels of her gurney into place before letting her onto the ER bed. "April, Mark was hit too. I need to know that he's okay."
"I'll update you as soon as I have any news. We're just gonna focus on you and your baby for now. Okay?"
With the help of one resident and an intern, April and the medic lifted Lexie onto the bed. April instructed the intern to get her an ultrasound machine as she and the resident inspected Lexie's body to make sure that there where no fractures or anything that might indicate the need for surgery.
As they were doing that, Lexie could hear the other doctors outside taking care of Mark. She had heard that Meredith had been called in and so had Amelia. She knew that this meant that the prognostic wasn't good.
"We need blood." She heard Meredith say.
None of this was good. None of this should've happened. None of this would've happened if she hadn't broken up with him in the first place. They wouldn't have been fighting and she could've gotten the chance to tell him she loved him.
"Lexie? Hey, Lexie?" April called her friend to get her attention. "Other than Monod scratches and bruises, you'll be fine, but I still need to have a look to make sure your baby is okay."
