It was sitting underneath a pile of his shirts in their closet. He knew it was safe there because Cole rarely ever went into their closet. The dresser on the other end of the room was where all her clothes lived. The only reason she ever had to come into the closet was to get shoes. And even then, she never even glanced twice at his stuff.
So, he concluded, the tiny velvet box was safe there, for when he did decide it was the right time.
"So I know you said we could go to a really fancy French restaurant, but..." Cole walked into their room, in the middle of putting in one of her earrings. Chris couldn't help but stare. She was wearing a striking red dress that fell just short of her knees and cut off at her shoulders. She walked into the closet, where Chris was standing and staring at the pile of his shirts, and absentmindedly slipped her feet into some heels. "I'm really craving a Jersey Mike's tuna sandwich."
Chris couldn't help but let the laugh out. "Don't laugh! I feel so bad but I really, really want that sandwich," she said, rolling her eyes. "So I was thinking that we could go get Jersey Mike's and keep our reservation at the French restaurant but only order wine and dessert there."
"We'll get you Jersey Mike's," he replied. "In the future when you wonder why I don't plan romantic gestures for you anymore, this is why."
She turned, and he caught a glimpse of the front of the dress. His eyes dropped down the length of her body, unable to help himself. She wiggled her eyebrows. "Crazy sex eyes," she announced, laughing and pressing a small kiss to his cheek. "If you're lucky, you'll get lucky tonight."
"It has nothing to do with luck and everything to do with getting you Jersey Mike's." He watched her walk out of their closet.
"You are one hundred percent correct. Oh!" She popped her head back in. "I love you. Happy one year."
"Happy one year. I love you." And since they were going to Jersey Mike's and didn't particularly care about what they looked like there, he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her in for a kiss designed to get them a little mussed.
"Let me go get my purse and then I'll be ready to go." She pressed another kiss to his mouth and managed to wiggle her body away from his grip. "See you in the car!"
Chris smiled at Cole before turning to stare at the little velvet box hidden underneath his pile of shirts in the closet. It wouldn't be tonight, it probably wouldn't be tomorrow, but one day, he was going to marry that girl.
"Hurry up, I want my tuna sandwich!"
Chris rolled his eyes and turned the lights in their room off.
