"Lexie! Breakfast is ready!" Mariska yelled loud enough that she could be heard from upstairs.
"Coming Mom!"
It's been a few weeks since the night Chris was at her house. Two weeks since they told each other they loved each other, almost kissed, and since Mariska almost told him about Lexie.
"I'll be right back honey. I'm gonna go grab the mail," Mariska said, slipping on her shoes and walking outside to the mailbox.
She opened the mailbox and grabbed the few things out of it and looked through them. Most were bills, but one of them was from the place where she had her and Lexie's DNA tested to see if Lexie was actually her daughter.
Mariska walked into the kitchen and began opening it. "What's that?" Lexie asked.
"It's our DNA results."
"Oh my god, what does it say?" Lexie waited for her mother to answer.
"It says that you're not my daughter."
Mariska's face dropped as she kept her tears at bay. "That can't be right," Lexie said, taking the paper from her to read it herself.
"There's no way," Mariska's voice broke.
"Mom, wait," Lexie smiled, "this isn't even ours. They must've sent it to us by accident. I hate it for whoever Diane Jackson is though."
Mariska laughed at her daughter and took the paper from her to see that it was indeed a DNA test for a woman named Diane Jackson. "Oh, thank god. I felt my heart drop when I read you weren't my daughter."
Mariska grabbed the phone and called the office. "Yes ma'am, I've received a DNA test that doesn't belong to me and I was wondering if you could tell me the results to mine."
"The name is Hargitay."
"Mhm."
"Yes."
"Oh, thank you so much."
Mariska hung the phone up and smiled at Lexie. "Good news kiddo... YOU'RE MY DAUGHTER!" Mariska yelled.
They both felt so relieved that it wasn't all fake. They've enjoyed these few weeks together and getting to know each other better.
"Sorry I keep asking this... maybe it's because I've figured out the people that raised me aren't actually my family and I want to know everything, but who's my father?" Lexie looked at Mariska, who didn't know what to say at all.
"Sweetie..." Mariska couldn't keep this from her any longer. She decided she had to tell her. "Chris."
"What?" Lexie didn't seem to understand.
"It's Chris. He's your father."
"What? Really? Does he know?"
"No... he doesn't know anything. After I found out I was pregnant, I left until I had you and put you up for adoption and then I came back."
"So you just didn't even bother to tell anyone? No one knows you have a daughter? Not even my own father?" Lexie's facial expression looked hurt and angry.
"Lex, I'm sorry. I really am. I-"
"No!" Lexie stormed off upstairs to her bedroom.
Mariska stood in the kitchen and put her face in her hands. She didn't know how to make up for this. How could she? She made the decision to put her daughter up for adoption when she really didn't have a good excuse. She was capable of taking care of her and she wasn't always working. She made it seem like she would've never been there for her child, but she was just making excuses to save her own ass.
She went upstairs and knocked on Lexie's door. "Can I come in?"
She didn't get a response.
"Lex... listen... I really am sorry. For everything. I shouldn't have put you up for adoption. I know that... but it doesn't change that you're my daughter. I love you. I fucked up, okay?" Mariska placed her hand against the door. The door opened and Lexie stood there looking at her mom.
"It's okay. I just snapped down there. I guess it's because I've always wanted to know if I was adopted or not and now I know and it's crazy. It's stressful. I'm sorry," Lexie smiled slightly and hugged her mom.
"It's okay baby. I'll tell Chris tonight if that's what you want."
"No, it's okay. Tell him when you're ready, Mom."
Mariska pushed Lexie's hair back with her hand and kissed her forehead. "I couldn't ask for a better daughter. Thank you, but I know you want me to... and I think it's only fair that I tell him."
"Mom, really it's okay you don't ha-"
Mariska cut her off, "But I do have to sweetie," she took a long pause, "I do."
