Chapter 4 - The New Job

A R I A N A

I got out of bed ready for a new day. Life in California hasn’t been treating me so bad. I got a hotel for a house, three new friends who are just awesome and I have not been asked about my ‘accident’. What more could a girl want?

I went down the stairs and sat down on the stool by the kitchen counter. Mary had already put a plate of pancakes in front of me and she went on with making herself a cup of coffee.

“So sweetie, will you be looking for a job any time soon?” She asked.

“Oh, I forgot about that actually. But I promise I’ll go job hunting right after school.” I replied and took a bite out of my breakfast.

“Well that’s actually why I asked. See, I work with this woman, Darcy. And she was talking about searching for a nanny to keep an eye on her eight year old. I could ask her about the job if you’d like.” She took a sip of her coffee and put the mug down, waiting for me to answer.

“Yeah sure, thanks. As long as it pays good and it’s not too far away, being as I don’t have a car yet, I’m up for the job.”

I took a shower and changed into my high waisted black jeggings and a tank top that said GEEK. I brushed my hair, put it into a messy bun and wore red converse to go with it.

“Bye, Mary.” I said as I went down the stairs. She gave me a peck on the cheek and handed me my satchel.

“Bye sweetie. And I’ll be sure to put it a good word for you when I talk to Darcy.”

“Thanks again!” And with that I was off.

(..)

I arrived to school a bit early since I took the bus instead of walking, so I had a few minutes before the bell rang. I walked towards my locker to take out my books for the first four lessons. I didn’t like the idea of having to go back and forth to your locker between lessons so this was the only way to solve it. When I was about to open my locker I noticed the word “slut” written in the middle. But you just got here! They don’t even know you! You don’t think I know that?

I opened my locked and took out my books, then slammed it shut without hesitation. I went to the library to kill time but as soon as I put down my bag the bell rung so I slung the bag back on my shoulder and rushed to Mathematics. I had maths yesterday but the teacher was sick so today would be the first day I’d meet him or her. I sat down in the right side or the class against the wall and waited for the teacher to arrive.

As if on cue, the teacher came into the room and put down his books. He took out his binder and searched for some papers.

He was somewhat attractive. He looked like he was in his late twenties and he had brown hair which he gelled to the side. His eyes looked hazel but I couldn’t tell very much since he was looking down. He was wearing a button down shirt which had the first two buttons unbuttoned exposing his toned chest.

As I said before he was very attractive.

He took out his papers and put them down before coming to the front of his desk and sitting on it casually.

He quieted down the class by clapping his hands once… only once. He looked around the classroom and his eyes narrowed as they landed on me. “I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you in my class before. What’s your name Miss?” His voice was soft but his eyed looked rough. Oh, boy.

“I- uh, I’m Ariana. I just moved here.” I spoke quietly afraid to wake the dragon that is hiding behind his  brown eyes.

“Well then hello Ariana, welcome to California. I’m Mr. Johnson. The following are the rules you have to go by during my class. No food. No drinks. No phones. You will raise your hand to speak otherwise you may not speak. Apart from when I ask you a question because then you HAVE to speak. Do not test my patience Ariana otherwise you will find yourself in detention. I am very serious about these rules so please feel obliged to obey them. Are we clear?” When he finished his rant I nodded.
