Chapter 5
{Narrator}
The ball of orange slowly inched it's way down while Taehyung ran another 20km, and Rie finally called it a day.
Tae left in a hurry, knowing that he's passed his 4:30 curfew by 30 minutes. And now, it was only left with Rie in the forest, packing the equipment used by Taehyung.
Why Rie needed him to win the marathon so much?
Simple.
A better life for she and her Mother with that prize money of $4,000.
And maybe.
Just maybe, they would have spare to reunite with Father who'd been providing them income from the city.
"Rie, could you go down to the city to get some paper and ink, while I prepare your late tea?"
"Sure thing!" Before rushing out the house looking like a mess, for the first time in 4days she combed her hair, tugging and forcing the stubborn knots loose. Fi-fi tutted at her unlady-ness.
She changed into appropriate wear. For women, a dress. Stupid Koven stereotypes. Rie donned a pale blue day dress, no ruffles, no sequins, no anything. Just plain, and slipped some safety pants on. Just in case. She did a quick French braid on the way out of the house, with fifi perched on her shoulders.
Flags coloured rich ruby red and gold with an elaborated crown in the centre of it fluttered overhead hanging from one lamppost to another, accompanied by voices of the market from the city growing louder with each step.
She had to twist and turn to get to her desired destination, her skirts swishing as she does her little dance, making it a little hard for fi-fi to perch on her shoulder.
In the midst of squeezing pass people, someone flew onto the ground earning a resounding smack on the cobble pavement just in front of her. Causing Rie to jerk back. Fi-fi lost her balance and took to the sky above her.
What the flying fuck?!
"Oh look! It's the cursed girl with her liiiiiiittle pigeon!" A man cackles from the crowd. Rie rolls her eyes and continues to squeeze her way through the crowd. Who let a bunch of drunken dogs out on the streets in the light of the day? With a P.Inferno circling overhead, intellectual people would know better to step aside and let her through, sadly these men just chose the wrong girl to mess with.
They block her path and create a semicircle around her, one of them spat just a inch near her feet.
' Paper, ink, paper, ink, paper, ink' she thought to herself her blood brewing. Fi-fi lets out a call of warning, which only made the men snicker and make faces at the Phoenix.
"Ooh, looks like your little birdie's a little on the edge huh?" One of them taunt. Fi-fi's feathers glow bright red and she calls her last warning to them, earning a cackle of laughter.
She smiles a crooked smile and shifts her weight to her left. She raises 2 fingers.
"I'd like to give you men 2 minutes to scram before you return to your wives with a charred eggplant." She motions downwards with her chin. Another string of harsh cackles erupt from them, now fi-fi had glowing eyes and had started circling around them.
"Fi-fi. No." Rie called out to her gently.
Just as the Phoenix was about to perch onto Rie, one of the drunkards blows a dart at the Phoenix and misses by a feather. Fi-fi shrieks loudly and her eyes go full on ablaze, her feathers dripping flames and she aims a fireball at the group of men.
"No, Fi-Fi! NO—!"
But it was too late.
Fi-fi had sent the fireball hurtling towards the men and they scream in agony as they disperse from the formation and are running with their hair on fire.
One accidentally knocks into a shop held up by canvas and it catches fire immediately. Like wild fire, one thing led to another, and the whole market is almost ablaze in just seconds. People are screaming and trying to save their goods from the blaze.
Rie could only stand in disbelief. What had she done? Where...where's Fi-fi? Alarms ring in her head and she starts calling for her Phoenix.
"FI-FI!! Fi-FI!!" She calls.
A woman strikes her cheek and she stumbles back. "BE-BECAUSE OF Y-YOU! MY STALL IS IN SHAMBLES !!" Many turn around and a man comes behind her and kicks her into a kneeling position, the same woman slaps her again and before she could do a third slap Rie catches her hand and slaps her. Hard, sending the woman sprawling onto the floor.
A man from the crowd yells and comes forward to challenge her. This time she wouldn't back down. She picks herself right back up. She's had enough.
She flips the man and slams him into a fruit cart. The man she flipped punched her square in the face, before she could even catch her breath.
A man. Hitting a woman. Now that's new. Rie managed to duck a punch meant for her head. With the last of her energy, she double kicked him in his stomach, and flung him into the fountain.
Rie crumples to the floor and heaves in deep gulps of air. While the crowd, was suddenly, silent.
Then she finally realises.
Soldiers were here the whole time. They narrowed their eyes on Rie and approached her. Her stomach dropped to her stomach.
"I..I didn't.." Rie gasped, trying to catch her breath. A soldier handcuffed her hands behind her back. No. No. This can't be happening. Mother was waiting for her at home. She can't leave her. Other than her, she wouldn't have anyone to bring her food.
"Miss, You will come with us."
"No" she wheezed out weakly.
"My Mother...s-she's....waiting for m-me. P-please..." she begged, her body slumped against a soldier.
The soldier just turned away from her and she was carried into a carriage.
