Notes before you read:

- Brett has already replaced Shay in ambulance 61

-Dawson and Severide got closer after Shay's death

-Dawson and Casey have already dated but broke up because of the co-worker situation but Casey still cares a lot about her

- I have tried to involve the other characters as well

- this is my first story so bare with me lol

Chapter 1-

"Ambulance 61, Truck 81, car crash"

"Let's go" Matt Casey says while everyone stops eating their lunch and suits up.

Ambulance 61 pulls up first and Dawson and Brett jump out and survey the scene. A car has crashed into a veteran memorial service and many people are lying on the floor screaming and yelling for help. Ambulance 94 and the guys from firehouse 27 are already there setting up triage and tackling the fire that has emerged in the car pulling a severely burned man out from a broken window. Dawson is the first to run over to the injured followed by a shocked Brett.

"Let's split up. You go and help with triage and I'll help with the rest" Dawson says taking lead as PIC.

Brett nods and turns to run over to triage. Truck 81 finally turns up and as everyone gets out they look around and see Brett put a black tag on a still body who's legs are clearly crushed.

"Herrman and Otis, you guys look for anyone who has been separated from the crowd. Cruz and Mouch, you guys do crowd control." Casey says as he rushes to a stressed out Gabby. Everyone yells out "got it" while they run to the places they are needed.

"How's it going?" Casey says calmly as he puts his hand on Gabby's shoulder.

"I don't know Matt. How can something like this happen to good people. People who fought for this country?" Gabby frowns, for some reason this hits her harder than everyone else.

"I don't know Gabby but what I do know is that we will all get through this and that we need to focus, okay?"

Gabby nods, half smiles and gets back to stitching up an 8 year olds deep cut on his leg. Matt's words calm her down like they always do.

Two hours later, Dawson and Brett get back from Chicago Med and when they walk into the common room all of the guys look at them pleading for information.

"Most of them are stable and in the ICU but Sargeant Callahan's daughter didn't make it". Brett says while looking down to the floor. Everyone's faces drop and Capp sighs resting his head in his hands.

"Are you guys okay?" Chief Boden says looking sympathetic.

"Yeah, we're fine." Brett gives them a reassuring smile but Dawson doesn't answer. Instead, she looks out the window with a cold, distant look on her face.

"Dawson? Are you okay?" Boden says even more worried then before.

"Huh? Oh, yeah...I'm fine." Dawson nods her head and sits down at the table to read the rest of the magazine she was reading before the call. A few minutes later Kelly Severide walks in towards Dawson.

"Dawson, Sargeant Callahan is on the apparatus floor. He wants to speak with you". He leads her into the apparatus floor and gives her shoulder a friendly and reassuring squeeze letting her know if she needed to talk to someone, he was there for her. As soon as Kelly leaves, Sargeant Callahan starts to speak.

" I uh, wanted to thank you for trying to save Lucy earlier today". He says with his voice crackling halfway through.

" you don't need to thank me" Gabby interrupted. "I couldn't save her". She says while looking at the ground.

"Hey uh, there's this spot open for a medic in the army" Callahan says trying to change the subject. "It's in Afghanistan, I was wondering if you'd like to sign up. It's for 3 months" he adds with a tired look.

"When?" Gabby says simply.

"You don't have to decide just yet but-"

"When" Gabby interrupts impatiently.

"In a few days" Callahan says gingerly.

"I'll do it. I need a change of scenery" Dawson sighs.
