Anne and Marilla began laying supper out on the table. For a first day in school, this wasn't so bad. Not many people liked her but she wasn't really surprised, she didn't expect anything more. Anne couldn't stop thinking about what Diana had said. Gilbert was so happy after he talked to Anne, and she just couldn't understand why.
Marilla was just about to leave to ring the bell for Matthew to come inside when someone knocked on the door. Anne continued to set the plates and cutlery out neatly, trying her hardest not to pay attention. Eavesdropping was a terrible thing to do. She learnt that the hard way at the orphanage.'Ahh good afternoon Gilbert!'
Anne almost dropped the plates upon hearing his name. Her attention was all on them now.
'Good afternoon Marilla! I just came by to drop this off' He gently handed her a basket of scones wrapped neatly in a napkin.
'Why thank you Gilbert! I didn't know you were into baking!'
'Well, I guess I went the extra mile today, seeing as you have someone knew in the family' he smiled.
'Oh so these are for our dear Anne? Anne come here please'
Anne rushed to the door stroking her braids to the front.
'Anne'
'Gilbert'
'I- er- i brought you something, I hope they're not too sweet' he laughed
Anne smiled at the ground'Oh lord!' Marilla exclaimed as she smelt burning from back in the kitchen, she ran back inside to check on the food.
'Do you need any help Marilla?' Anne shouted looking slightly concerned.
'No everything's okay, the food is fine'
Anne turned back to Gilbert with a smile. To her surprise he was already looking at her, with his deep brown eyes. Her smile dulled.
He made her nervous.
And she knew that.
But she couldn't show it.
She kept as calm as ever.
There's no way he could know she was nervous.
None at all.
'Why so nervous? I don't bite' He teased.
'Nervous? Im not nervous i just-'
He tilted his head towards her raising an eyebrow
'If you say so. Anyway I hope you enjoy the scones. I'll see you around' He smiled again
'yeah' Anne whispered
Gilbert nodded turning away.
Anne stayed perfectly still watching him walk away. He disappeared into the distance when Anne walked back inside.
'Very nice of him to stop by isn't it!' Marilla exclaimed.
'Yes very nice' Anne wasn't really paying attention anymore. Gilbert stayed on her mind until the night. She couldn't sleep. Why was she still thinking about him? It wasn't worth it, since he was most probably only doing it because it was basic manners.
