He sighed and turned around to face the mess I had left whilst searching for my keys. He gazed at the leaking baby bottles, diapers, CDs and the now crumpled poster. Then he bent down and started organizing everything, placing them neatly back into the diaper bag. He then placed the diaper bag and a now folded up stroller into the trunk of my car and walked over to face me.
Without any explanation he bent down and scooped me up in his arms, taking extra care to not disturb my left arm. Neither of us had said anything so far, but after this I started to protest, “Niall. You don’t have to-” but then he cut me off.
“No Ava, I do. This is all my fault, just let me drive you home.” I stared at him dumbfounded as he placed me into the passenger seat. He then bent down to pick up the keys that were still lying on the ground and walked over to the driver’s side.
“Wait… you can’t drive,” I mumbled, recalling him saying in an interview that he hadn’t got his license yet.
“Well, technically, I’m not… but I still know how to!” Niall said, winking at me.
“I thought you left me…” I mumbled as I continued to stare at him with what I knew to be a dumbfounded expression.
“Well… I started to, but then I heard you scream and decided to come back to see if you were alright. It’s a good thing I did cos you’ve got a dislocated elbow. My brother did that once and he almost lost his arm because he didn’t get it reset fast enough. I need to take you to the ER right now.” Niall responded, turning on the car and backing out of the parking space.
“Niall you can’t. May’s gonna be at my house soon to pick up Brooke, it’s almost nine o’clock. And besides, you’re going to miss your flight.” I was stunned to realize that Niall actually did kind of care about me.
I had no idea why I was arguing with him about whether he stayed with me or not. But then I realized how much a visit from the boys meant to some fans and they did have a schedule – they were supposed to be in New York by Monday, and it was already Saturday… they had a signing to do there too. I couldn’t just keep Niall for myself; there were a lot of people who loved him as much as I do. And I couldn’t break their hearts just because Niall’s was too big that he couldn’t refuse to take me to the hospital.
“Ava – we’ve already missed our flight. It’s alright though, cos we didn’t have anything to do tomorrow anyways. Paul agreed to have us stay here for tonight, and leave tomorrow afternoon. We have a flight at five-thirty.”
I was so happy I could almost scream, but I didn’t. I just laughed out loud and said, “Niall that’s amazing! Then we can hang out tomorrow, right?” I beamed up at him, because even though I was only an inch shorter than him, I had slouched in my seat so as to keep my left arm comfortable, so it wouldn’t bounce around as much on the gravely road.
“Of course, Ava! I wouldn’t want to do anything else!” Niall said, returning my smile, his blue eyes shining. “But… where’s the closest ER? I know you’re in pain, and either way you’ve got to get it reset.”
I glanced down at my arm and realized I hadn’t felt anything for a while, I still felt a little pain but it wasn’t as agonizing as when I’d first dislocated it. I tried to move my fingers, but they wouldn’t even twitch. That was then that I realized my arm was turning blue and purple.
“Um…. Niall… I don’t feel anything,” I whimpered as I tried not to freak out, praying that my arm was just in shock or something, but I’d heard enough stories about dislocated elbows during soccer.
If the elbow wasn’t reset back in to place fast enough, all of the blood tissues in my lower arm would die, which meant that they would have to amputate my arm. I started to hyperventilate as I realized that I could very easily loose the use of my left arm… I would never be able to play soccer again… I couldn’t play video games with Brooke… I wouldn’t be able to text or type anymore…
