Tuesday evening, I was closing the store. I was about I go home. Well, I don't know if you could call it a home, it's more of an alleyway behind a restaurant. As I was about to leave the small shop, I noticed my twin, Luke. He said, "Lucinda! They found us, we have to run!" Oh, great, I thought. "Okay, I'll just write my boss a note," I replied, grabbing a small piece of paper. 'Sorry it's such short notice, but I've gotta go. I'm seriously extremely sorry!' I wrote. I taped the note to my apron that I had taken off a moment ago. "Okay I'm - Luke?" I asked, walking out of the store. I didn't see him, even though he said he'd wait for me. He probably left for the ally to get out stuff, I reassured myself.
I quickly walked, almost ran, to the restaurant. I went into the small alley. Being 16, I was extremely skinny, so I could fit in some pretty small spaces. When I got behind the restaurant, however, I found 4 familiar faces. First, my younger twin, knocked out and bloody. "Luke!" I yelled. The other three faces were ones I absolutely dread. They were very familiar demon hunters. They were the ones that set fire to our house when we were Seven. They were the ones that were responsible for our parents death. I quickly reached for the dagger that was hidden under the bottom of my pant leg. "You wanna fight? Let's fight," the oldest of the three said. The other two dropped Luke and grabbed their own knives.
The younger of the three cut my knee with his knife, creating a cut about 2 inches deep. My jeans ripped, and blood started dripping down my leg. The older one went straight for my stomach, but miraculously, he missed. The other boy with the knife got my elbow, and I managed to stab him in the shoulder. He was bleeding fast and a lot. The younger one went to stab me in the chest, but I managed to get him near his thigh. The older one was still trying to punch me, but I kept dodging. That's when Luke woke up. "Luce!" He said, noticing me fighting. He grabbed his own knife and stabbed my opponent in the chest.
"Luke, I'm so glad you're okay!" I said, hugging Luke. "Yeah, but we should probably go before someone finds this," he said, gesturing to the bodies. " Yeah, but where are we gonna go? We don't exactly have money for a plane ticket, " I told him, crossing my arms. "Well, we're only about 3 hours away from southern Utah," he said. "Yeah, if we drive! Walking will take about 8!" I said. "Oh... Well at least it will get us somewhere. We should get our stuff." We started getting together what little stuff we had, which included two blankets, a few pairs of clothes, some food, and our weapons. We decided to change before we left, since we had blood on us. I also put bandages on us.
So the eight hour walk began. We were currently in Nevada, close to the border. It wasn't so bad, we've walked farther before. Every couple of hours we slept in an alleyway, and we left when we woke up. Soon, though, exhaustion began to get the better of us. About halfway through the walk, we both started walking slower, falling asleep faster, and waking up later. "Hey, Lucinda, do you think that we'll go to a high school here?" Luke asked. In all honesty, I wasn't very sure. We didn't go to a school last time because it was too dangerous. "I guess so. The older hunter is definitely dead, and the other two might bleed out. So, yeah, I think we will," I said. I noticed that we had just passed a sign that said 'Welcome to Utah! The Beehive state!' "One hour left," Luke commented, having seen the sign as well. "Yeah."
Eventually, we saw a city sign. "Finally!" I said, stretching my arms. " Well, if we're going to find a school, we have to find a place to stay! " Luke said excitedly. "I guess you're excited. We'll just walk around until we find a suitable alleyway, " I said. After about ten minutes, we found one. It was near a fast-food restaurant that was hiring for cashiers. So now we have a possible job, I thought, trying to catch up with Luke. How could he move so fast with an injury on his leg? "Lucinda, I swear, you're so slow!" Luke laughed, "now hurry up so we can find a public high school!" I rolled my eyes and continued following him.
After a few more minutes, we found a school. It was called 'Shinara high'. We went to sign in to the school. When they asked where we lived, we obviously didn't really have a house, so we had to tell the principal this. "Actually, we're orphans, we raised ourselves on the street," I said, before Luke could say anything. She wrote that on our information paper. 10 minutes later and finally we could leave. "There are book bags in the counselor's office with everything you need, and you have to come to school tomorrow," he said as we left the office. We went to the counselor office and got the bags, and then went to the ally. Luke fell asleep quickly, but I had another nightmare and woke up in the middle of the night. I didn't have much else to do, so I started playing around with my hair, deciding how to do it for tomorrow.
