A/N : this is a reminder that all the writing on the right side is not in the present, it's usually a representation of the past/flashback/memory
There was a loud bang that caused even louder screams from down the hall.
Gunshot?
She never knew what real gunshots sound like. She had only heard them in games or TV shows, even then she didn't like watching those types of things. But it did sound like the ones in the games. Yes, those were gunshots.
William.
William was a 5 year old that had been the closest thing to a baby brother and a best friend for the time she had spent in the hospital.
He was also in the 2nd stage of lung cancer.
She flipped her blanket, grabbing the phone and dialing 911. After finishing her call, she knew that the protocol was to stay in the room, turn off the lights, and lock the door, but what about William?
Maybe it was the tumor in her brain, but something willed her trembling fingers to dial her boyfriend's number.
"Just because he doesn't notice you this time doesn't make you any less special, sweetheart," Nicole comforted William. A famous actor had come to their hospital to pay a generous visit, and the crowd around them was so big that Nicole didn't want William going in. He was clearly upset, crossing his arms on his chest and facing his back towards Nicole with a pouty face.
She began to tickle his sides in a strong attempt to fix his mood. The little boy laughed, turning around and bumping into a long pair of legs.
"William!" Nicole shouted, running over. She lifted him onto his feet, dusting him off and making sure he was okay.
"You okay, buddy?"
Nicole glanced up at the stranger for a quick moment, being nearly blinded by how handsome he was. "Uh, yeah, he's okay."
"Haz, you ready to go?" A familiar voice called from behind Nicole and William.
No way.
As he adjusted his phone in his pocket, Tom looked at the girl first. She was far too young to be the boy's mother, more of an older sister. Her eyes were warm and sweet like milk chocolate.
"Babe? It's so lat-"
"There's a shooter in the hospital, Tom," she whispered. Before he could respond, she continued, "I'm going to get William."
"I don't think we've met yet. I'm Nicole."
"Tom. Tom Holland."
"N-no, Nicole, listen to me-" he stuttered after processing her words. "Look, I'm heading back from a shoot right now. I'm coming to you, okay? Just stay where you are."
Of course that would've been the smarter choice, but she wasn't looking to be smart right now, she was going to the Children's Ward and no one could stop her.
"I love you," she breathed one last time before hanging up.
Maybe she hadn't been scared before but she was now.
She was scared while traveling down the dark hallway. It was so quiet, it had never been this quiet before. She was scared when she arrived at William's room and discovered no one in there. She was scared when she found both Tom and William in the middle of the hallway with a pistol pointed in their face.
