Rangers Apprentice-The Recovery

Chapter 5

Allys's head felt like it was about to explode. Will was just lying there, staring at her. After her little cry with Halt, she had asked the doctor when she as allowed to visit Will. He had told her that she would be allowed to visit today at noon. So she had come at noon and had been sitting there for some time. She had walked in and had been amazed at the fact that Will's eyes were open. She had tentatively called out to him.

"Will?"

After he didn't answer her, she tried again.

"Will?"

He returned her call with opening and closing his mouth and then a grimace came across his face. She rushed to him. He was wincing, but there was sound coming out of his mouth.

"Hurts.....arrow.....love......break...."

She couldn't make out the rest of his sentence but she was just happy that he was trying to communicate.

"I know it hurts Will, I know," she told Will. She looked down at Will and saw that with all that trying, he had overexerted himself. She just softly smiled and kissed Will.

"Just rest and heal."

After that, she had pulled a chair up to his bedside and just held his hand. At one point Pauline had come in and tried to persuade her to come down to the kitchen to get some food but she just responded with a shrug and squeezed Will's hand tighter. She was also offered a chance to sleep while Pauline watched over Will. She responded with a curt shake of her head. Pauline left.

Halt had wanted to check on Will for some time, but he was swamped with paperwork that he so dreaded to do. But it was now or never. He would never get to it. There was already a huge pile on his desk. He walked down the halls to Will's room. He slowly opened the door, knocking to make sure nobody was in there. He was not expecting what he saw. Alyss was in Will's bed, curled up around him. But what surprised him was that Will's arm was thrown over Alyss in a careless manner, as though to shield her from the slight chill of the room. Halt smiled and heard as Pauline walked in.

"They look at peace," Halt commented softly.

"They do. But we should probably move Alyss to a proper bed."

"Let them have this moment. Things probably won't be peaceful for a long time. And not to forget, they were to be married, Pauline. I do not want to ruin it for them."

Pauline nodded and walked towards her daughter and her fiance. She took an extra blanket and spread it over the peaceful couple after she checked that Will's bandages did not need changing. She walked back over to Halt.

"I just want a happy future for them. I want them to be happy."

"I know Halt, I know."

Alyss woke up warm and covered. She realized that a visitor must have found her after she dozed off next to Will and covered her. She looked over at the peaceful look on Will's face.

"Oh Will, how I miss you. Come back to me."

 She scanned the blank room, wishing that Will was just sleeping and that this was their bedroom in the cabin. She looked over at Will sadly.

"Come back and meet our unborn child."
