"It's itchy" I try and reach my back to scratch the itch caused by the fabric of the dress. The dress didn't look bad. It was pretty cute and all but the itchiness doesn't make it any better. Juls practically forced me to wear it. She locked me in our bedroom and wouldn't let me out until I was fully dressed. I screamed at her for a while and pounded on the door until I gave up knowing I won't be let out and then got dressed.
"For once in your life, Stop complaining!" smacking my hand which made me curse. I see her give me a look in the mirror, She hates me swearing but she didn't say anything. She continued to work on my hair, delicately putting it in a fishtail braid to go with my outfit. Every time we have visitors, we always dress up to score a few points of attention. But in the end, we were never chosen, It's always the younger and cuter ones and every year we get older, our chances of getting adopted by lovely couples and families were getting slimmer and slimmer.
"Done!" She beams, "how does it look?" I look at my reflection in the mirror, not one hair out of place.
"It's beautiful," I say,
"You're beautiful," looking at me with admiration and proudness of her work "Now let's get downstairs, everyone is waiting." I look up at the clock with the time of 9:35 am. Breakfast started an hour ago, Ms Davis won't be pleased, but then again I didn't care. Julie and I walked to the eating room and were greeted by a very annoyed Ms Davis.
"You're late," she stated, I mumbled an apology and grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl. The actual breakfast was already gone leaving me struggling to peel the skin off the fruit.
"Sorry Miss it was my fault, I was helping Milly get ready. It won't happen again" Julie shows a wide toothy smile. Her smiles were either magical or she was the favourite. Julie could get away from almost anything. Her smile earned her a small smile in return from the she-monster herself.
"It's fine Julie, help yourself to some bacon from the kitchen" I feel my mouth drop at her offer, "I'll see you later for the visitors" She placed her hand on her shoulder as a kind gesture and left the room. What the hell? Like I mentioned before, favouritism.
"What?" Julie looks at me,
"It's fine Julie, help yourself to some bacon. Oh why don't you do whatever you want, I won't mind at all!" I mimicked Ms Davis and then taking a bite of banana.
"Your problem?"
"Told you you're her favourite" gesturing to her with my half eaten banana, "I would have said no to bacon but an offer would have been nice" taking another bite.
"You're crazy," she laughed and sat across me. She took an apple from the bowl and took a bite out of it. When I finished the banana, I tossed it at her but missed by a long shot, it landed on the floor. "You better pick that up before someone gets hurt," she says,
"I'll pick it up in a minute," I say just as a ball whizzes past centimetres from my face. "Hey! take the ball outside, Now!" I look at the little boy who annoys the shit out of me. "Joey, I mean it. Do you want to get in trouble by Ms Davis?" his face dropped at the mention of her name,
"No, but I wanna play!" he bounces up and down with excitement. Joey is a seven-year-old annoying brat that I would call a brother. He arrived at the orphanage when he was two and I was immediately in awe. I took care of him when growing up. I was close to him just I was close to Julie.
"Play later, we got guests coming," I say,
"Catch me first!" He started running around the room, I got up and went after him, laughing. Juls cheered for Joey to run faster while I chanted that I'm close to catching him. That's when I felt myself slide across the room, I should have thrown the banana skin in the bin earlier, I thought as I hear the antique vase break into a thousand pieces.
