 Chapter Seven

Robbie and I were safely on the ground, but were so shocked that we had forgotten about the captain’s instruction to move a safe distance away. We stood below the big yellow slides, watching and assisting people as they followed behind us. Through the flow of bodies we spotted many casualties, but none as serious as Thomas’. He was bleeding right from his left eye socket down to his wrist and was finding it hard to breathe from smoke inhalation. A lot of people were suffering with breathing difficulty, most from the rear of the plane, but there were also a few burns, 10% at the very most, from people who were sat beside that match.

Last of all, the captain escaped from the blazing fire of the plane, coughing and obviously distressed, but he was still directing us to safety.

“Follow…me…everyone.” He panted. “If people…are injured…help them along!”

And with that, he took my hand again and began a challenging sprint up a hill to what appeared to be a cliff.

“Sit…and wait…here.” He ordered us, still refusing to rest. “I’ll…go and…rescue…them all.”

“No!” I argued.

“We’ll do it. Please, just sit down and rest; you deserve it, sir.” Robbie agreed.

“Thank you kids…but it’s my duty, I’m the captain of this plane and I shall not rest until each and every one of the people whose lives I am responsible for are safe.” The captain determined, catching his breath now.

“Please, sir, let us help!” I pleaded.

“I can’t risk letting you get hurt. The plane could explode at any moment now, I have to go.” And with that, he began another sprint towards the plane to collect those who hadn’t already followed us.

Tears were flowing down my face as Robbie and I, hands still interlocked, saluted at our phenomenal captain. Out of nowhere, muffled beneath the sound of fire engines and sirens, an upbeat tone began to play. I realised it was my phone and answered.

“Hello? Is that you, Crystal? Have you landed?” My dad began down the phone. “What’s all the noise?”

“Never mind that, dad.” I gasped for air. “Yes, we’ve landed. And what a hell of a landing it was.”
