What If?

Chapter Five

The next day I start work in the library, and while in the middle of a call, I receive a message from an unknown number, most likely Ben's brother texting to confirm our date. I cannot believe Eva would do something like this. The one time she's actually nice to me is to meddle in my life. 

After I complete the call, I check my phone, and sure enough, it is.

"Hi, is this Brooklyn? My name is Jasper. My brother Ben gave me this number."

I reluctantly reply. "Yes, this is Brooklyn. Hi Jasper."

"I guess we're going on a date then?"

"Apparently..."

"Listen, I'm not the type of guy who normally does these things, but I think my brother would actually murder me if I didn't go through with this, so I'd like to get it out of the way as soon as possible.

'I'm not saying that I don't want to go out with you or that you're a horrible person. But the more that I think about it, how could I know if you're a horrible person or not? I've never met you."

"That is a very true statement, but the same could be said of you. How do Iknow that you yourself aren't a murderer, baby hater, or kicker of puppies?"

"Well, if I was a murderer, I'd most likely be in jail. Babies are okay unless they release bodily functions on me, and I wouldn't kick a puppy, though I'm more of a cat person."

"If you were in jail, you obviously did a bad job, and why would you even go into that business if you can't do it well when you know that even the slightest mistake could mean jail time? Also, Babies can't control their bodily functions, so it would be unkind to write them off for this they cannot control. But we can agree on the cat thing."

"I wouldn't necessarily say that murdering is a business but how do you know if you're good at it if you never try it?"

"How do I know you're not in jail right now?"

"I guess you'll have to find out on our date. Friday?"

"Friday."

He seems nice, but I'm still not sure about all of this.
