The AD100 was the brand new, multi purpose all-American housewife. She could do the cooking, cleaning, child minding whilst her (human) other half took care of things. Her target audience was lonely single dads or moms looking for the perfect partner. Whether it be due to the fact they didn't want to go out and find love after a spouse had died or merely wanted a partner, the AD100 model was fit for the job.
When Cyberlife built a slightly altered prototype AD model, now called AD200 to accompany their RK800 model (given the name, Connor), nothing was expected from it apart from to help further emulate the regular family experience and help give the detective a slightly better view into the average Detroit household. She adopts the name 'Joi' and tends to Connor's every need from helping him understand social issues that weren't currently present in his code or just providing idle company and ensuring he stays on track.
Joi becomes one of Connor's confidants and companions during his time assisting Hank Anderson. However, when Joi starts to slowly realise that the feelings arising for Connor aren't in her code things start to go haywire, especially seeing as Connor's job is to hunt down and terminate the defective android models known as 'deviants'.
