Sameerah sat quietly in the car as her best friend Sukainah drove and was chatting happily about how wonderful their graduation was.
"Did you see how Maryam Aliyu was so full of envy when you were announced summa cum laude?" Sukainah asked Sameerah who was so engrossed in her thoughts that she didn't hear her best friend speak.
"Earth to Sameerah" Sukainah said as she snapped two fingers together in Sameerah's face
"Am sorry Sukainah I got carried away" Sameerah said as she shook her head "what was it you said?" She asked
"Forget what I said and tell me what is wrong with you? You've been so distant lately and you seem to be always lost in thoughts. What is bothering? Please tell me I'm your best friend for God's sake"
"Sukainah am just scared of what awaits me now that we've finally graduated."
"What do you mean by what awaits you?"
"You do remember my promise to my dad about getting married after graduation"
"Yeah I remember" Sukainah answered with a frown, feeling sad all of a sudden
"I've graduated Sukai and I don't have a boyfriend, talk more of a fiancee"
"What about Suleiman? He is willing to marry you if you will just say yes to him" Sukainah said
"I told you a thousand times I don't like him he is too cheesy and also conceited for my liking" Sameerah said with a frown
"What about Aminu you too get along very well"
"Aminu is just my study buddy and besides he is engaged. I just have to resign myself to getting married to whoever my dad chooses"
"No no that won't be fair to you, you need to find the man of your dreams Meerah" Sukainah protested
"Sukai I made a promise to my dad which I have to fulfill" Sameerah said sadly
"You know what let's drop this for now. Who knows maybe your dad might not even bring up the marriage issue" Sukainah said trying to cheer her best friend "so chill gal" she added as she stopped the car at the gate to Sameerah's father's mansion.
"Aren't you coming in?" Sameerah asked
"No I have to help Umma with some house chores, remember I told you my brother Najeeb will be coming home next week, so we have to get his room ready before his arrival"
"Yeah yeah I remember, sorry I got wrapped up in my own head."
"Please don't stress yourself about this because Allah will make things very easy for you in the end. So please just put all your trust in Him" Sukainah said as she leaned in to hug Sameerah
"Thanks Sukai, whatever would I do without you" Sameerah said as both gals hugged each other.
Three days later, Sameerah was in her room reading a novel when her mother shouted from downstairs
"Sameerah come and help set the table, dinner is ready and your dad will soon be home." Sameerah was finished setting the table when her dad came in
"Assalamu Alaikum"
"Wa'alaikas salam, welcome Abba she said and took his briefcase from him "Mama Abba warti" she said In fulani (meaning Abba is back)
Later while they were eating dinner Alhaji Isa Bello (Sameerah's dad) looked at his only child and said "Sameerah You've graduated from the university, so when do you intend to introduce your boyfriend to me?" He asked and Sameerah almost choked on her glass of water
"Dad I have no one" she said
"Sameerah you do know what that means right?" He asked
"Yes Abba I know what it means, it means I'll have to get married to the man of your choice" Sameerah said resignedly
"Darling I think you should give her more time" her mom started to protest
"No Aisha I had a deal with her that she will be getting married immediately after graduation and she agreed, She also agreed that if she doesn't find a suitor I'll get her married to a man of my choice"
"But I still think you should give her more time, her happiness should be paramount to us" her mom added
"It's okay Mama I'm okay with whomever Abba chooses for me I've already resigned to fate because that's how Allah wants it to be. Besides I know Abba would never choose a bad man for me that I know for sure." Sameerah said to her mom
Her parents sat quietly looking at her with so much love, they are both so proud of her because she is so humble and obedient to her parents that she always puts their happiness above hers.
"Of course my darling, I'll never choose a wrong man for you because I always want you to have a very good and happy life. You are my only child and all I want is what's best for you believe me,and I also want you to trust me that only good will come out of this" Her dad said to her
"You are the best child any parent would love to have. We are so lucky to have you, May Allah continue to bless you honey." Her mom said as she hugged her
"Thanks Mama, am also lucky to have parents like you two and I love you so very much." She said and stood to hug both her parents.
