LYDIA HUDSON

ethan laughs as he holds my hand, making me follow him to the ferris wheel. I look up at the ferris wheel, my heart starts to race. "there's no way i'm climbing that thing." my hand leaves ethan's and I cross my arms across my chest.

"why? it's safe, we'll be fine." I cock an eyebrow and ethan sighs, "i've climbed up this before, it's safe. I promise." he says the last two words with such promise. my hands fall down to my sides and I give him a defeated look.

his lips were swollen and his cheeks were rosy, mine most likely were too. he reaches for my hand again and pulls me in for a hug, reassuring me it was perfectly safe.

he pulls away and flashes me a dorky smile making me smile as well. he grabs onto one of the handles and pulls himself up, climbing on the ladder that they probably used to climb up and fix things.

he gestured me to follow him and I wipe my hands on my shorts, grabbing onto the handle and following ethan's every move.

when he reaches the end of the ladder that's when my anxiety started to kick in. I was terrified. trees surrounded the ferris wheel, sometimes little branches would get in our way as we climbed in between the poles that held up the seats.

my palms start to sweat and I quickly wipe them on my shorts once again, wiping the sweat that had formed off. I look up and see ethan looking at me from a seat. "come on you're almost there!" he shouts and I gulp, telling myself over and over not to look down.

but my eyes had a different idea. ethan shakes his head, as if he had read my mind. "don't look down, just keep going, you'll be fine." he starts to slide out of the seat, ready to help me. my eyes wander down a pole and my head hangs low, my eyes scanning the ground.

"holy shit." I repeat over and over again as my palms start to sweat again. "I told you not to look down, lyd." ethan is suddenly next to me and is keeping hold of my waist. he directs me on where to go and next thing i'm in a seat, my heart racing and my eyes are closed, trying to catch my breath.

"i'm guessing you're scared of heights." he chuckles as he sits down next to me and grabs my hand, rubbing circles on my skin. I open my eyes and nod my head, "it's stupid, I know."

he shakes his head vigorously, "no, no, everyone's afraid of something. it's totally normal, trust me. I have a brother who's terrified of heights. it's so bad to the point where he won't even go on roller coasters."

"mines not that bad, thank god." I laugh and ethan's pearly white teeth show as he smiles at me. "what?" I ask and he vaguely shakes his head, "you're just beautiful. has anyone ever told you that?"

my cheeks heat up. "have you ever been in a relationship?" I joke, "I feel like every guy tells their girlfriend that they're beautiful." he nods his head and shrugs, "i've never had a girlfriend. i've had things with girls before but it never lasted because they always found out about my brother and left me for him."

"that's terrible, ethan, i'm sorry." I scoot closer to him and lay my head on his shoulder. he stays quiet and I watch as the clouds pass by, covering the sun and making it shady. "have you ever been in a relationship?" this time he asks me and I frown, remembering that I was in one.

"yeah, for four years." I sigh and ethan runs his hands up and down my arm, "what happened? if you don't mind me asking." I close my eyes, remembering everything that went down prom night, when grayson and I broke up.

I storm out of the gym and wipe at the tears that were spilling from my eyes. I hear someone yell my name and I refuse to turn around, not wanting to face my boyfriend right now.

"lydia! will you stop?" grayson grabs my forearm and turns me around, making me face him. his face softens when he sees i'm crying. "why are you crying?" he cups my cheek and i'm quick to remove his hand from my face.

"don't act like you don't know." I spit, causing him to frown. "I really don't know what you're talking about, lyd." he says, eyebrows knitting together and I bite my lip. "don't call me that. and don't pretend that you weren't all over that girl just minutes ago."

my hand moves to the gym doors. grayson looks behind him and I take that as a chance to turn around and leave. "lydia, you have this all wrong." he shouts, running after me. he steps in front of me, grabbing my hands and cupping them in his large hands.

"I know what I saw, grayson. we're done." I say quietly, gently taking my hands away from grayson's. his eyes are quick to tear up and I frown. I walk around him. "lydia, wait! that wasn't m-" I step out into the cold night air before he finishes his sentence and the tears just keep coming as I call my dad and ask him to come get me.

that was the last time I saw grayson. "it was prom night and I went to get us drinks and when I turned around I saw him kissing another girl. I ran out and he rushed after me, telling me he didn't understand what I was talking about. I broke up with him and left, and I never saw him again."

ethan's body goes stiff. "what high school did you go to?" "west morris, why?" I look at him and his jaw is clenching and unclenching. "ethan?" "i'm just thinking, how did we not know each other? that's the high school that I went to." he says and I furrow my eyebrows. weird.
