As Johnathan and Cinder slept upstairs and as Y/N made his way to Beacon academy, Roman was sitting up in his bed looking over Neo, Jenni and Willow sleeping in the other three beds.
He sighs, thinking back to the incident that happened in Atlas and how close he was to losing everything he cared for. He thinks back to his life before Y/N and Jenni entered his life.
Him and Neo were just some petty criminals stealing dust for their well-being. You see Roman never has any malicious intent, he just did what he needed to survive. He knew that before he found Neo he was a loose cannon who had nothing to lose but that day when he found an abandoned infant child in an alleyway changed him. Finding that little child was a turning point.

Just one look into her eyes turned him from a volatile criminal to a man doing what he can for the well-being of himself and a girl he would come to see as his daughter.
She gave him a new lease of life and he taught her all he knew. When he found out that she was a mute he dedicated himself to learn sign language and to teach Neo how to use sign language so they can communicate with each other. He was dedicated, he has taken the fall for her, has taken bullets for her and he wouldn't continue to give anything including his life to keep her safe.
But he knew this wasn't the life for his daughter, so he went for a job. It was all or nothing, succeed and this will set him for life... But failure could kill him. That was the level of danger in this job and he took it... No second guessing.
But this job involved him infiltrating Ironwood's compound for blueprints for the latest Atlas technology. It was going well until the man he was working for set him up to eliminate him.
Just the mere memories of this event causes his breath to hitch and him to hyperventilate. He feels something wrap around his arm and see's a sleepy Neo with her head resting on his shoulder. He leans in and kisses her forehead and covers her with the blanket.
He thinks back to when he was hiding out from the authorities with Neo by his side. He broken into a detached house in the Atlas valley, he needed to for the sake of Neo, his daughter. But the house wasn't empty and he was face to face with a white haired man holding a gun towards his face.
His life at this time flashed before his eyes, tears started to flow thinking of the memories. But Y/N saw this and his stance soften and he asked him to explain himself. He felt immense sympathy, for the orange haired man as he himself is a family man and is doing whatever he can to protect them.
Roman stroked Neo's hair as he looked to the ceiling. He removed a folded piece of paper from his pocket, that paper was a form and a birthday present. As Neo's birthday was coming up he decided to do something he wanted to 18 years ago, officially adopt her and make her his daughter. With the adoption papers in hand he smiled and held Neo tight.
At this point both Neo and Roman were thinking the same thing
