N E W Y O R K
A gasp escapes Eve's lips as she plummets down like a stone, her tired body lost in the gravity. The air rushes painfully into her ears and she struggles to breathe since the oxygen suddenly feels so heavy and sharp. She doesn't understand why she's so tired, she's supposed to be fighting, screaming. Instead, it feels like she's falling asleep. Before the soldier can hit a building with high speed, she suddenly lands in a rough pair of steady arms, the impact shaking her body.
"Got you." Tony assures her and before Eve can realize what's happening, he attaches a device to her back. "FRIDAY, send her down."
"Wait, what? Tony– " The nano-tech of the device spreads around her shoulders and beneath her armpits, building up a juncture on her back to release the parachute. Iron Man then lets her go as she shrieks in surprise, now floating rather safely down while he flies with full speed to the spaceship. With gritted teeth, Eve manages to pilot the parachute and she lands back on Bleecker Street within a short minute.
"Are you okay?!" Bruce asks worriedly and steadies her as Eve almost sinks to the ground, the fatigue and wounds overcoming her.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She nods and looks back to the sky, the spaceship nothing more than an almost invisible dot in the far distance. It's too late. Tony is their last hope to stop Thanos from there and she can't help. Spotting a little panel on the device on her shoulder, Eve realizes it must be a communication system and she sighs in relief. She would never forgive herself if she didn't talk to him at least one last time. "Tony?!"
"Yeah?" The billionaire answers calmly and in this moment, Eve's concern slightly eases. She just needs to trust him, something she hasn't done for a while.
"Try to save them." Her voice is gentle and she takes a deep breath. "And be careful. Come back."
"Will do." Tony just responds briefly but not coldly and the connections breaks off, he assumingely got on the ship. Sighing, Eve glances back down and Bruce deactivates the device for her, removing the nano-tech from her body.
"I didn't remember you being so strong." Bruce admits in a serious tone and she shrugs.
"I have one or two theories that could explain my upgrade. But not here, we can't waste time if Thanos' little army is really on their way to get Vision."
"We also need to treat your wounds. Some things never seem to change, huh?" The scientist tries to lighten up the situation as he supports her to walk.
"I did miss my favorite doctor." Eve smiles at him, it's like a piece of home has returned. The break up of the Avengers has caused more damage than she would like to admit and she would do anything to get them all back together.
Bruce notices the broken cellphone of Tony on the ground and he picks it up, sharing a brief glance with Eve. Now they know what's their next step. Wong behind them creates a portal and returns to the Sanctum Sanctorum. "Where are you going?"
"The Time Stone's been taken. The Sanctum remains unguarded. What will you do?" Wong asks and Bruce shows him the phone.
"We're gonna make a call."
"Thank you for everything, Wong. I'll return the clothes after everything." Eve promises and the Asian man only nods silently to say goodbye before he closes the portal. The streets of New York City are oddly empty now, deserted through an alien attack once again. Chaos and destruction now mark the city but for some reasons, it doesn't look strange or foreign to Eve.
