Paul wrote from Ephesus during AD55 – during his 3rd missionary journey. This letter is a follow up to Paul's church plant that took place during his 2nd missionary journey. The purpose of these writing is to identify specific problems such as, offering solutions by teaching doctrine and exhorting Believers to mature in their Christian living.
The city of Corinth is a large city, much business and traffic of goods and people due to the geographic position (see map). This meant there were a mix of very rich and very poor (mostly slaves) also a lot of different people like Romans, Greeks and Jews. Sexual immorality was normal; they used sex as a form of worship to the goddess Aphrodite therefore, many temples were in prostitution.
Note on studying epistles: It is essential to identify the difference between a teaching concerning the Believer's identity and an exhortation concerning the Believer's performance.
