His voice echoed through the quiet penthouse of the hotel, far too energized for five in the morning. I sighed, unzipping my bag and rummaging through it for a pair of joggers, still half-asleep and not entirely ready for Chase's usual brand of early morning dramatics.

"I'm not sure what she read this time," I muttered, tugging out a wrinkled black T-shirt, "but it's probably not true."

"You think I don't know when it's true?" Chase fired back. "She woke me up waving her iPad like it was the Ark of the Covenant."

Chase calling me at five a.m. CET could only mean two things: someone had been hospitalized or Claire, his perpetually invested fiancée, had stumbled onto another scandalous gossip article and needed instant emotional support. Considering his tone, I'd bet heavily on the latter.

I glanced out the window, and the sky was beginning to blush with soft streaks of orange and pink, the fragile colors of dawn bleeding into the city's silhouette.
