Unicorns, the beasts that symbol purity themselves, were born of war. When the kingdoms were plunged into battle with one another, all horses were taken for the cavalry.
But any animal, no matter how well trained, balks at mankind's savagery in battles, and these gentle horses, when plunged into the war, ran. With the cavalry so diminished, the battle was considered a loss by both sides. Angered by this, the generals declared that all horses be stabbed through the head and left to die, swords still embedded in their foreheads. When the foul deed was done, the armies traveled away from the unsuccessful battlefield.
A few days later, a wandering mage happened by the horses' death site, and was disgusted by the slaughter of peaceful animals. She called upon her magic and the horses were reborn, the previous swords now gilded horns atop their noble heads. With these horns, the serene beasts could heal even the worst of wounds, thus undoing much of the damage the abhorrent war had wrought.
Despite being reborn, the newly christened 'unicorns' retained memories of their past life, and so avoided any who had killed another. If one's soul was clean of all sins, they were permitted to touch the unicorns' horn, and so gain the power of healing themselves. For this reason, unicorns and those they touched were highly exalted.
And so creatures of peace were created from the most despicable of wars.
