{Alice wrung her small hands, panicked breath laboring as the grizzled homeless man's corpse lay on the ground. She'd tried to help the man by pulling him along to find help, but didn't know how to save his life once he'd fallen.

There were many things Alice's preteen mind had yet to understand; including why a silhouetted figure approached, waved a hand outward and over the deceased man, and had begun to whisper words that Alice didn't recognize as the language she spoke.

"Are you trying to hurt him?" Her voice was still helplessly small for her age and as the higher pitch broke silence, she watched the stranger's hooded head turn to her.

The black figure came close, knelt down slowly with dark sleeves resting on knees for balance. Alice's chest ached with fear until a raised hand pushed back the dark hood. The weak street light revealed a boy older than Alice, with illuminated crystalline eyes and a starkly contrasted shadow along a bony jawline as soft white locks of hair fell forward, now free from the confining cloth. }
