The memory was still alive as Alice now washed thin, precise fingers and watched a disappointingly small television, left to an unrecognized movie, as she massaged artisanal blackberry scented soap over her knuckles and palms, then laid them beneath the running faucet until the water at the bottom of the metallic sink was no longer red.
"This is getting out of hand." a stern, low register spoke just above a whisper, over her shoulder. The unnaturally chill air from his breath gave her goosebumps.
"Oh? Pun?? You're killing me." Alice teased, without need to see who had appeared. Once again, it was worth everything she'd done. He was worth it all.
"I hear one too." lines crinkled around familiar crystal eyes and white hair, as immaculate as ever, fell and settled with the Reaper's laugh. But the chastising that typically followed was cut off.
"I know I didn't wait long enough again, but I missed you." Her eyes met the floor, already aware of the danger he would remind her of, then she glanced at the stained carpet where the thin and barely clothed woman lay- staring back at Alice with glazed over and distant eyes.
"I know you do, but the police are looking for patterns and you're giving them exactly what they need. You're choosing the exact types of people they expect." His hand rose and hovered just over her jawline- as if there were an invisible barrier keeping them apart. Alice's hand rose to lay over his but he yanked clear of her touch immediately.
"You know we can't." His voice was flat, harsh.
"I know." she sighed, hanging her head. "But wouldn't it be worth it just to try? Just once?"
"I'm not risking your health... your life. I'm still trying to find a way."
