Twenty-three murders completed. Alice counted. She still knew their names, knew how she'd killed each one, knew their age ranges and appearances by heart. She had to know now as Asher's arrivals now included a report on how her pattern needed to change.
"Alice you need to stop this. Work in a nursing home for fuck's sake!" His voice strained and shook. "They're closing in. I'm not worth this anymore. You need to stop."
"Baby, I'm only doing this so we can be together." Her voice pleaded in equal desperation. "I need you!"
"If something happens, you will see me one last time and never again. That's all there is at this rate. You. Need. To. Stop."
"I.. I can't do that."
"Of course not." His tone was bitter and he wrapped the sleeves of his robes over his skin before pulling her into a reluctant hug. The solution had been barriers. True barriers. Not that he had discovered it on his own. It had purely been Alice's impatience and careless opinion of death.
"You're the only love I have left in this world. If there's no you, there's nothing." The sobs muffled as she squeezed him tightly, still relishing the ability to hold him and to be held herself.
