"So what now?"
Lanna whispered, her hands sliding gently down Evieh's shoulders to her collarbone. Her smaller gloved hands daintily tracing the bone, as if trying to distract herself from the world around her.
"Now we wait until it's safe to bring you back up." Evieh murmurs, her hands about Lanna's torso, carefully holding her. An assassination attempt. All too common. She had just been trying to enjoy some tea with her friend when one of the guards had pulled out a knife, and had tried to stab the blue haired princess. Evieh hadn't allowed it, rushing forwards to grab Lady Lanna's hand and pull her towards the secret safety hatch. She had lifted her up over her shoulder to fit them both inside, and now Lanna was pressed against her chest in a somewhat uncomfortable position.
But the warmth from her body distracted Queen Evieh from the discomfort.
Now she could look at the blue head closer than ever, and that wasn't something to complain about.
As she gently took a lock of her blue hair in between her fingers, she stopped.
Letting a memory wash over her.
The first time they had met was after Lanna's husband had passed. She didn't seem... too upset over it. Certainly she didn't have the grief of a woman who had lost her husband, but instead she wept for the prince as if he was nothing more than a friend. Her grief didn't even last a whole 24 hours before she took hold the throne. Not that anyone suspected her of foul play. She seemed too empathetic and naive to commit murder. Besides. They had all seen the man slice his throat clean open at the ball.
She had visited Evieh and Oliver to let her son and Evieh's husband disclose a trading deal, one that would profit the both of them. Evieh left alone with Lanna, who had just smiled sweetly and asked the redheaded queen to show her around the gardens.
Evieh had obeyed, feeling utterly drawn to the smaller woman.
She had been shocked when Lanna had rushed over to see the horses, her small round face full of delight as she pet and cooed to the creature. Her gray-brown eyes sparkling as she smiled to Evieh.
"I love horses," she had explained.
"Not allowed to have them at my castle. One of my counselors is allergic and thinks they're dreadful."
She had laughed a little, and had surprised Evieh with her undainty giggles.
She had a real, genuine laugh. Not one that was smothered down by properness and the act of being "lady-like."
Evieh had smiled and gently stroked the horses mane, nodding.
Glad she got to hear princess's real laugh. Not her fake one.
As the memory washed away, she gently stared at Lanna in the present
Touching her face instinctively.
"And when can we be sure it shall be safe?"
Lanna frowned softly, sliding her body down tiredly, as if exhausted. Gently smiling at Evieh as she looked at her. Evieh's mouth felt dry. She went to speak, hesitating a moment. Before letting the words fly out.
"I'll go check. You can stay here. I don't want you hurt." She sputtered. Her cheeks burning, going as red as her hair.
She had never been the valiant type. There was just something about the woman that made her feel the need to keep the world away from her. Keep her safe.
Lanna let out a soft snort, shaking her head. "You humor me, my friend."
She giggled sweetly, gently sliding up the side of her dress. Making Evieh's face fire, going to protest. To stutter. Anything. Just make some sort of noise-
Only to realize Lanna had just been pulling a small knife from her garter.
The blue princess smiled at her, gently slipping the shiny white dagger from her thigh.
"I think it is absolutely lovely you would be willing to foolishly charge out there for the sake of my safety, but-" she pauses and smiled ever so sweetly at her. "I think it would work much better if we had one another's backs."
Evieh was speechless once more. In general, she didn't really talk much. Never really had a reason too. But Lanna. Lanna just took the breath right out of her.
"Here." She whispered, slipping another dagger from her other garter into Evieh's hand.
"It.. is a bit longer- probably easier for you to use-" she stopped and smiled. "I am not very skilled, I will be honest. But I do know I work better with smaller blades."
Evieh just nodded, gently and shakily holding Lanna up more as she straightened her legs.
She could hear someone. Right outside the door.
Evieh's throat felt dry. "We... we need to wait- and plan-"
She didn't finish. Lanna popped right out and tackled the attacker, bringing her little dagger into his throat. Ripping it across his neck. A look of shock, somewhat regret, and relief on her face. She did it quietly, covering his mouth. Looking at Evieh for approval.
"I don't wait." She whispers, a small smile on her face.
Evieh's jaw went slack, and she grasped at her thoughts for the right words. Before just shaking her head and smiling. "I can see that." She stutters out, existing the hiding place as coming up besides her. Gently taking her hand, glancing at her as they hear more malicious voices.
"Well then. Let's not keep them waiting too, eh?"
She smiled. And to her delight, the little blue haired princess smiled back.
