As the sun set over the city, Lanna Amedon felt a small wave of peacefulness go over her. The feeling of calm and determination.
She needed as much determination as she could get, afterall.
It wasn't everyday she was hanging from the top of her office's large building, going to drop down thousands of feet into the busy street below.
But really, was this something new? She thought to herself as she looked up at the sky.
Mayor Lanna was a kind and peaceful mayor, trying to keep her city under a tight and yet fair justice system. She didn't tolerate villains, doing everything in her power to shut them down, and her love for any hero that protected her beautiful city was overwhelming. Which made her an enemy to any villain, and a valuable asset.
So on the occasion, she'd be used as a way to coax a hero out.
Such as now.
Lanna was tied to a firm vertical pole, her body right over the edge. Her back was to the pole, and she could see the entirety of her city slowly coming to life as night fell. By all means she should have been terrified but she just . . . didn't. Not completely anyway. This wasn't her first rodeo. She knew the ending to this gripping tale. In the end she always ended up safe at home with her sleeping children and her cat. Or, in this case, on a date with the woman of her dreams. Lanna was in fact, dressed to to do so. A lovely purple dress that matched her pretty blue curls, the ends ruffled slightly. The bottom of it fluttered with the rooftop breeze, making Lanna feel a bit chilled.
The pole bounced slightly as someone adjusted it, her determination wavering as she instinctively squirmed and kick a little. She wasn't kidding herself. She's terrified of heights. Lanna inhales, before calming herself. She'd be fine.
"I don't think anyone's coming." She snorts, struggling to crane her neck back and see who it was this time. Vanish, Tyranny, or maybe even The Glow.
Her eyes hardened when she realized who it was.
Not exactly a villain. Not a robber or a typical bad guy.
But an angry ex husband. An abusive monster. Oliver.
"SHE'LL COME." He snaps. Running a hair through his frazzled auburn hair.
"I KNOW HER BETTER THAN YOU, MISS MAYOR. JUST YOU WAIT." He sneers, taunting her.
Lanna rolled her eyes and sighed. He was dumb enough to see she wasn't just saying that to get him to stop.
"Right. My bad."
She shifts her shoulders, attempting for a moment to break free but. The height stopped her. Half the times she'd escape on her own, but when the danger was this bad? She just went limp, knowing better. Even if she did get free, she'd fall and die. There was no way she could survive the fall from this height.
'Cmon, Evieh... where are you?'
As if on cue and reading Lanna's thoughts, the rooftop entrance door blasts off with a fiery sound. Although the mayor can't see her, she just knows it's her redhead.
Of course she's correct.
Evieh Smith's eye's were full of rage and fire as she sent a blast straight towards her once-husband. The red haired woman's gaze could cut glass. She wasn't wearing her supersuit, just a blazing red cocktail dress. Her red hair was piled atop her head, some strands escaping from her quick movements. Although Lanna couldn't see her, her heart was still full of love and pride anyways for her beautiful girlfriend.
Oliver ducked and rolled to the side as Evieh launched a spray of fire at him, carefully taking cover from her heated attacks.
Evieh scowls, only softening slightly when she looks over at Lanna. She's of course terrified for her, everytime. But she knows Lanna's a tough girl, and the mayor trusts that Evieh can bring her home.
A small smile plays on Evieh's lips.
"You stood me up!" She calls out, struggling to control her temper with a little joke.
Lanna just laughs in response. A perfectly bright sound that gives Evieh all the more confidence to deal with her shitty ex.
"Sorry, I'll make sure to schedule my next kidnapping at a more convenient time!" Lanna calls back, squirming slightly in discomfort.
"What even happened to you?" Evieh calls out as she marches towards Oliver, her hands in front of her creating a fiery wall.
"Chlorophyll'd in my own dressing room. A new one!"
"Only you could sound so sarcastic and calm over this."
Lanna just smiles at that, closing her eyes. Trying not to look down anymore.
"Don't be scared, ok?" Evieh's voice sweetly called over to her. "I'm gonna get ya."
"I'm not scared. I trust you, darling."
Lanna's came back firmly and truthfully, the trust and love in her voice wrapping around Evieh's heart like a blanket. They've both saved each other countless of times.
This shouldn't have been any different.
Oliver came up with a grin. And Evieh was so focused on the safety of her girlfriend, she didn't see the flash of silver until it was too late.
The pole Lanna was attached to had a chain on it, anchoring it to the roof. Wrapped around some bricks and other things to keep it sturdy. With one shot, Oliver shoots the chain.
And then everything is happening in slow motion.
The chain breaks quickly, a sick clack and snap as one of the links shatter. The pole lurches forwards, and then suddenly Lanna is gone. She doesn't scream, or call out. There's just a little gasp and she disappears over the edge, the unwrapped chain sliding quickly with her.
Evieh feels her whole body tense up, the sound of Oliver's triumphant laughing piercing her like a knife. She was going to kill him. She would fucking kill him. But not now.
She could still save her.
The fire slowly cooled from her fingertips and palms, and she was running.
Running faster than she's ever run to the slowly disappearing chain as it grew shorter and shorter.
Evieh barely managed to grab it before it was gone forever.
"LANNA-" she gasps, gurgling in pain as she tries to pull her up. Evieh wasn't the strongest. She was strong but- there was so much weight and-
Despite doubting herself, she managed to pull it up.
Lanna is shivering and terrified, her eyes squeezed right. But she didn't scream.
As impossible as it seemed, she still trusted Evieh.
The red haired woman let out a cry and quickly yanked her all the way up, laying the pole down on the roof. Not seeing Oliver slowly come up behind her. She's forgotten about him a moment.
"CHRIST ON THE FUCKIN' CROSS-" Evieh shrieks, quickly untying the mayor, yanking her close.
"I'M SORRY- GODS- YOU- YOU WERE SO SCARED I FEEL IT OH JESUS-"
Lanna is silent, just touching Evieh's face and hair and hands. Trying to assure her things are ok. She gently locks her arms around Evieh's neck, careful not to hurt her. Before her eyes widen and in a second she's got Evieh's gun in her hand.
She fires two shots.
There's a clanging sound, and a deep groan. Then a thud.
Evieh turns around and just. Can't hold it in. This is too much for her.
Oliver lays on the ground, groaning and sputtering in pain as his chest blooms with red. The metal pipe that was in his hand on the floor.
He was coming up to kill Evieh. He wanted her and Lanna dead.
He wanted.
To kill them.
The fiery haired woman just seems to crumple, burying her face in her girlfriend's chest. Choking sobs coming from her mouth. It hurts. She knew Oliver wasn't a good guy, but she didn't think he'd resort to murder.
The sun was set completely now, but neither of the women seemed to care. Lanna softly standing up, guiding her poor lover to do the same.
"I've got you." Came Lanna's soft, shaking voice. Only making Evieh cling to her harder.
They stayed like that for a long time. For the whole night.
Not leaving each others side, even when the sun started to rise.
They weren't going to ever let eachother go again.
